Commissioned by the BBC for Ashley Wass one of Radio 3's New Generation Artists and first performed at a Proms Chamber Music Concert on 31st August 2009.'The series of concert pieces (ranging from 5 to 16 minutes) that I have called Studies started with the intention of exploring either pianistic or compositional topics but has since No 7 a homage to Dukas also reflected my love of the music of various composers. Tippett?s piano music some of which I have played many times has always fascinated me for its examination of an enormous range of keyboard sonorities and technique and for its lyrical poetry and the energy and dynamism so typical of its composer. Inthis study I have combined my tribute to him (during which I refer to two of his works) with an exploration of sonata form for many years I resisted the idea of writing a Piano Sonata (note the capital letters) thinking sonata form itself was not for me but I suddenly felt I could write a single-movement work thinking of the examples of Hoddinott Scriabin and Tippett himself which would impinge closely on sonata form. Thus the opening vigorous section recurs as a kind of recapitulation to close the work and between those two parts are a slow ?movement? and then a lightly scored scherzo. The actual ending itself vanishes into the distance in a little phrase which gets quicker and quieter until it is hardly heard.'????????????????John McCabe

Concerto No.2 'Haydn' A series of works based on the surviving two bars of Haydn's 'lost' Double Bass Concerto. Based on the two surviving bars of Haydn's 'lost' Double Bass Concerto and dedicated to David Heyes, this magnificent new concerto is a tour-de-force from a respected and leading Czech bassist-composer. In a tonal and accessible style, there are musical and technical challenges for the advanced bassist and this edition is only available in solo tuning. Influenced by the late 18th-century style, but imbued with Czech lyricism and influences, this new three-movement concerto is a major addition to the repertoire and utilises the entire range of the double bass. The concerto has been performed throughout Europe many times, most recently in Macedonia and Serbia by the composer. Miloslav Gajdos has composed and transcribed many works for double bass in a 40 year career and is Professor of Double Bass at the Vejvenovsky Conservatoire in Kromeriz (Czech Republic) alongside many international recitals and masterclasses. Performance Level: Advanced Miloslav Gajdos is one of Europe's most active and inventive bassist-composers. He was born in northern Moravia in 1948 and initially learned violin before transferring to the double bass, studying with Alois Kriz, Jiri Bortlicek and Ludwig Streicher. He has been Professor of Double Bass at the Vejvenovsky Conseravtoire in Kromeriz (Czech Republic) since 1971, and was a member of the Olomouc Symphony Orchestra for a number of years. He is Director of the Gregora International Double Bass Competition, founded in 1979 and held every two years in Kromeriz, and has been a juror at many competitions in Hungary, Germany and the Czech Republic. Miloslav Gajdos is a prolific composer and arranger and, for almost 40 years, has produced a vast body of original works and transcriptions for double bass which are performed worldwide. His original works combine Czech lyricism and melody with brilliant technical demands, and music from one to sixteen double basses. He writes in a traditional and accessible style, producing music for every level of performer, particularly for the advanced bassist, and his many works for unaccompanied double bass are frequently chosen as international competition repertoire. Miloslav Gajdos was Recital Music's Featured Composer in 2007 and has recently revised a number of earlier works for the intermediate bassist which will be published by Recital Music.

Music Street is a three year program for beginners four or five years of age. Students are motivated through various singing and playing activities as they are introduced to all the note names and animals that 'live? on Music Street. Unlike many courses for young children, the TMA Junior Courses create students who develop good performance skills within their first year, while still developing their ear and reading skills, ensemble playing, and understanding music fundamentals. Vivaldi achieved popularity throughout Europe with his collection “L’estro armonico” Op.3. He wrote the cycle which consists of twelve violin concertos (including Concerto Op.3 No.3 featured here) for the orchestra of the “Ospedale della Pietà” where he was teacher and director for many years.The two fast outer movements from opus 3/3 feature ritornelli combined with more virtuosic solo sections as was prevalent at the time. This ritornello form gives structure to the movements. It also gives the student who plays both the solo and tutti sections in this edition the opportunity to vary the returning motives interms of dynamics and ornamentation. In the short but expressive Largo distinct quarter notes alternate with patterns of sixteenth across all the strings. This allows the student to practise various bowing techniques.

Op. 2 no. 1-The exuberant amorousness of a newly-wed couple pulsates in every note of Gabriel Fauré?s Dans les ruines d?une abbaye (In the ruins of an abbey). In this piece the reverent silence of prayer no longer prevails but within the venerable walls 'various shouts of joy' and 'sparkling laughter' are now heard. The old graves have long been overgrown by stinging nettles and a new dawn of spring and of love fills the air. Napoleonic post-revolutionary France which drove the author of the poem Victor Hugo into exile is also building a new world on the ruins of olden days. Although the setting by the composer 40 years younger than the poet uses the romanticized backdrop of the oldabbey with its 6/8-meter it reflects the uninhibited happiness of the two lovers who do not look back. These art songs were originally composed not for chamber choir but for solo voice and piano. Denis Rouger has carefully adapted them to suit the requirements and expressive possibilities offered by a larger ensemble without losing the any of the qualities of the original in the process. Each part in the choir has a melodic line drawn from the harmonic and rhythmic framework. In the process the variety and refinement of the choral language combines with an enormous flexibility in form and expression as French melodies or German art song demand from a soloist and pianist. The songs have been recorded by the figure humaine chamber choir on the CD 'Kennst du das Land ...' (Carus 83.495).

Beethoven?s Concerto For Violin And Orchestra is one of the most famous works in the history of music. Over the last 150 years it has been published in numerous editions none of which have up to now done justice to the work. For this edition Jonathan Del Mar has freed the work of additions made over the decades by various editors and violinists. The significance of Beethoven?s solo and tutti markings has also been clarified for the first time. Following the publication of the full score Piano reduction and orchestral parts (BA 9019) in the autumn of 2009 Bärenreiter is now publishing a study score of this pioneeringcritical edition which will prove indispensible for all violinists and students as well as for orchestras and music libraries. An introduction by Beethoven expert Barry Cooper on the history of this concerto is included for the first time. Del Mar?s edition clarifies Beethoven?s solo and tutti markings for the first time.
