The Blues is a well-known style of popular music. The name does not come out of thin air. After all, the term ‘blues’ refers to a state of mind: with the sentence ‘I got the blues’ someone means they are in low spirits. The blues originate in the melancholic music that the slaves in the southern United States made to relieve their depressing circumstances to some extent. This new concert work makes use of ‘blue notes’ (the flattened 3rd and 7th notes of the scale) which give this exciting work its blues sound.De Blues vindt zijn oorsprong in de melancholische muziek die de slaven in het zuiden van de Verenigde Staten maakten om hun ellendige omstandigheden enigzins te verzachten. Karakteristiek voor deze muziek is onder andere het gebruikvan 'blue notes', die uiteraard ook in de blues Forever van Roland Kernen veelvuldig voorkomen.Roland Kernen erinnert in seinem Stück Blues Forever an den Ursprung des Blues in der melancholischen Musik der schwarzamerikanischen Sklaven in den Südstaaten der USA. Die Musik drückte das tiefe Leid aus, diente aber zugleich als Trost und Stärkung. Charakteristisch für diesen Musikstil ist damals wie heute die Verwendung so genannter blue notes“, die auch in Kernens authentischem, bewegenden Werk häufig auftauchen. Le blues s’est façonné dans les plantations du Sud des États-Unis. C’est dans cette musique mélancolique que les esclaves tentèrent d’apaiser quelque peu les souffrances d’une vie de misère. Le blues devient alors source de consolation. This expressive piece depicts three periods that play an important role in the history of the American state of Virginia, the colonization, slavery, and the American Civil War. The first movement describes the adventures and hardships of the first colonists through lively American sounding themes.The expressive slow movement, in which a melancholic minor theme forms the starting point, depicts, with clever use of blues elements, the oppressed slaves on the tobacco plantation. This is followed by a illustration of the Civil War, heralded by ceremonial figures from the brass section. The work is brought to a close with a slow but optimistic theme heralding hope for the future.De kolonisatie, de slavernij en de Amerikaanse Burgeroorlog: drie periodes die een belangrijke rol spelen in de geschiedenis van de staat Virginia. De expressieve inleiding geeft de avonturen en ontberingen van de eerste kolonistenweer. Vanaf 1619 voert Virginia ten behoeve van de tabaksplantages als eerste staat zwarte slaven in. Dit wordt uitgedrukt in een langzaam gedeelte, waarin een melancholiek mineurthema en elementen van de blues het uitgangspuntvormen. Het scherp koper kondigt de Amerikaanse Burgeroorlog aan. Het slotthema verklankt verlossing en hoop.Auf der Landkarte sieht der amerikanische Staat Virginia wie ein etwas schief geratenes Dreieck aus. Die bewegenden Ereignisse wurden in mal lebhafte, dann wieder langsame, in mal kämpferische, mal friedvolle und mal melancholische und schließlich optimistisch stimmende Musik umgesetzt. Ein ausdrucksstarkes Werk über ein bewegendes Stück amerikanischer Geschichte!Pour composer cette oeuvre au caractère épique, Jacob de Haan s’est inspiré de trois périodes marquantes de l’histoire de l’État de Virginie : la colonisation, l’esclavage et la guerre de Sécession. The evergreen My Way, originally a French chanson (Comme d'Habitude), was written by Jacques Revaux and Gillies Thibault and first released by Claude Francois in 1967. Paul Anka wrote the English lyrics which were used by Frank Sinatra who made it in to the American charts with his world famous interpretation in 1969. Since then the song has been covered by a variety of pop stars, including Elvis Presley. This arrangement is based on the Elvis version and within it the chorus appears in a swinging blues style. Gecomponeerd voor de 1e divisie van de Open Nederlandse Fanfare Kampioenschappen 2012Turend over het Friese platteland zag ik door de weerkaatsing van het zonlicht in een opkomende bui plotseling een regenboog verschijnen. Dit indrukwekkende natuurverschijnsel inspireerde me tot het schrijven van een compositie waarin de kleuren van de regenboog uitgangspunt waren. Elke kleur associeerde ik met willekeurige, contrasterende onderwerpen. Zo is Spectrum of the Sky een concertwerk geworden dat bestaat uit zeven, deels in elkaar overgaande, korte composities die qua thematiek en/of ritmiek aan elkaar gerelateerd zijn.1 Sun and Water Een regenboog verschijnt aan de horizon. Erg langduurt de betovering van dit prachtige natuurverschijnsel niet. Het schitterende plaatje wordt plots onderbroken door opkomend onweer.2 Red Planet MarsEen ruimtevaartuig vertrekt, om na een lange reis van negen maanden aan te komen op Mars, de rode planeet.3 Interlude in Orange MinorOranje: de nationale kleur van Nederland. Koninginnedag 2009. De festiviteiten op die dag werden wreed verstoord door een aanslag op de koninklijke familie. De gevolgen waren dramatisch. 4 Yellow FieldsDe eerste zonnestralen, knoppen in de bomen, nestelende vogels, pasgeboren dieren in de wei en onmetelijke velden van gele koolzaadbloemen. Een en al muzikale vrolijkheid, want het is lente.5 Capriccio in GreenGroen - de meest voorkomende kleur in de natuur. De grote diversiteit in ritmische en melodische lijnen verklankt de grilligheid van de natuur in het algemeen.6 Blue LakeDe helblauwe meren van Nieuw-Zeeland zijn van een onbeschrijfelijke schoonheid. Het magnifieke uitzicht op zo??n meer vormde de inspiratiebron voor het expressieve zesde deel.7 Grand Finale ??The Seventh?Indigo is voor het menselijk oog vaak niet te onderscheiden van blauw of violet. Deze kleur is in dit werk dan ook achterwege gelaten. De laatste verklankte kleur is violet - weerspiegeld in de septiem, het zevende interval, dat overheerst in de finale van de compositie.Jan de Haan.
