The two-part composition has always been an essential stage in didactic treatises for teaching counterpoint; the Duo has been of fundamental importance, since the early decades of the sixteenth century, in the teaching of singing and in instrumental practice.The interpretation and performance of Scarlatti’s Fughe a Due require on the one hand a correct and prompt interpretation of the chords which are the basis of the movement and the relationship between the two parts, and on the other an indispensable invention of a third or even a fourth part (to ensure, above all, full and significant harmony).An indication of this practice of filling in is offered by the same ms. source containing Scarlatti’s Fughe a Due. In Fugue II in D minor, in the first eleven bars, we find indicated above the Bass a series of numbers showing the interval in relation to the respective upper line. These indications should not be confused with the numerical marking typical of the basso continuo and of the partimento, for they establish a clear sign of the usual practice exercised in the teaching of counterpoint in order to guide the student visually to pass safely and speedily from two to three or more parts; this type of numbering is often found in the counterpoint methods of the time, in particular in the section illustrating the Contrapunto semplice e Diminuito.These fifteen Fughe a Due, unlike the many Duos and Duets which figure in the counterpoint methods, are not a simple display of formulas, but they assert themselves as a calculated sample of characterized styles and genres, a series of pieces conceived with an exquisite sense of form.

Volume 19 of the Schutz Complete Edition brings together 21 very different compositions from various phases of Schutz's compositional output. The spectrum ranges from a short, two-part sacred concerto to a six-part cyclical psalm setting and large-scale polychoral concerto, from well-known works such as the Osterdialog to a completely unknown madrigalian composition, full of emotion, to a simple chorale setting. A particular challenge was posed by the ten works or versions of works which survive incomplete. Two of these, the Christmas concerto Ach Herr, du Schopfer aller Ding SWV 450a and Ein Kind ist uns geboren SWV 497, appear here for the first time in print. With both of these it turned out that it was possible to reconstruct the missing parts fully from available material. For the Ultima Verba Psalmi 23, Gutes und Barmherzigkeit SWV 95 and the two Nunc dimittis: Herr, nun lassest du deinen Diener SWV 432 and 433, the editor's reconstructions are presented, and likewise with the chorale movement In dich hab ich gehoffet, Herr SWV 446. The impressive Easter dialog Weib, was weinest du SWV 443 is one of the works which survives incomplete. In order to give an impression of how the whole work might actually have sounded in the complete form as planned by Schutz, the Appendix to the volume contains a reconstruction of the four-part vocal setting of the missing final chorus, based on the surviving figured bass. The magnificent Gesang der drei Manner im feurigen Ofen (Song of the three men in the burning fiery furnace) SWV 448 from the book of the prophet Daniel, the original source of which is lost, is critically discussed and published with various possibilities for scoring.

In 2017, PWM commemorated the bicentenary of the death of Tadeusz Kosciuszko, a great hero of Poland. To mark the occasion, PWM Edition presented this publication revealing a different side to Kosciuszko to that which is widely familiar. We usually hear and read about his military accomplishments, which certainly deserve to be remembered, yet Kosciuszko was a multi-faceted person who cannot be fully appreciated from just a single perspective. This leader of a national insurrection was a pupil of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in Paris. He also played the piano and may possibly have composed and arranged music as well. The aim of this publication is to shoaw Kosciuszko both as a creative artist and also as a source of inspiration for composers of the early nineteenth century. Comprising three separate components, this hard-bound boxed set with three books is divided into two parts, dealing with art and music. Presented in the first part are drawings and watercolors that appear independently, as a selection of reproductions, or else as illustrations of Pawel Ignaczak's essay on Kosciuszko's works of art. In the second part, Adam Tomasz Kukla's article introduces readers to the world of music composed or arranged by Kosciuszko and music referring to him. Musically gifted readers are encouraged to play selected compositions from those discussed in the essay, thanks to the music accompanying the book. Text in Polish and English.

On January 1st, 2016, Stephane Vande Ginste had an extraordinary intention: he planned to compose a 1-minute piece for piano every single day for the whole year. The result is an impressive collection of piano miniatures which - although contemporary - result in a variety of musical styles: apart from some experimental pieces, there are jazzy- and poppy pieces, more traditional etudes, polyphonic compositions and so on... The 366 pieces also tell various stories: from very emotional events like the terrorist attacks in Brussels over homages in honor of deceased artists (David Bowie,...) to birthdays and festive occasions,... . More than once, even poetry (Heinrich Heine, Anna Enquist, ..) or other pieces of art inspired Stephane to compose his daily one-minute piece. Every single composition originated from the here and now, and therefore capture the unfiltered feelings and emotions of that very unique moment in time: joy, enthusiasm, but also melancholy and sadness.

Bach 's Inventions is a collection of 15 Two-Part and 15 Three-Part pieces. Originally composed as pedagogical exercises for his students, their contrapuntal composition still works brilliantly as an introduction and practice in counterpoint. Bach wrote the Inventions as a way for his students to practise playing in two parts, then, after some progress, in three parts; with an end goal of becoming more accomplished at composition. The two groups of pieces are arranged in order of ascending key, with each covering eight major and seven minor keys.
