Two Bach Chorales

A collection of 31 of Bach's chorales which lend themselves wonderfully to sight-singing and are also very appropriate for performance. Selected and edited by John Leavitt.

This Collection of Chorales harmonized by Bach contains it is believed all those that he arranged for four voices excluding of course the elaborate settings for Chorus and Orchestra. There are also included two for five voices and some to which it has been necessary in order to complete the harmony to add a few small notes representing instrumental parts.

Bach newly interpreted - the vocal band Slixs edited a songbook for mixed vocal ensemble or small choral ensemble containing unusual arrangements of instrumental works by Johann Sebastian Bach. The arrangements range between classical interpretation and flirting with jazz. They demand from the singers a profound basic education in music and flexible alternation between the voices. Explanations of how to pronounce the syllables to be sung help to generate equal instrumental tones. / Choeur Mixte

In the early 1700s, Bach's chorales enchanted listeners with their inventive harmonies, chromaticism, contrapuntal motion, and changes of tonal center. Since that time, music students the world over have studied the chorales as a paragon of 'common practice' harmony and voice leading. And by virtue of their sublime beauty, musicians continue to perform the chorales to this day. The four-part texture of the chorales can make their performance on guitar ? with its fingering limitations ? somewhat problematic. But by sometimes thinning the texture to three or two parts, and sometimes inverting the lower parts (allowing the alto or tenor to temporarily serve as the bass), we've created easy-to-play classical guitar solos that capture all the interest and beauty of Bach's original compositions.
