Eugène Bozza's Badinage meaning banter is an exciting addition to the trumpeter's repertoire. Exploiting the instrument's potential Badinage is ideal performance repertoire for intermediate- to advanced-level Trumpet players. Born in Nice Bozza (1905-1991) went on to study at the Paris Conservatoire winning prizes for the Violin conducting and composition as well as the Grand Prix de Rome. His capability and creativity come across clearly in his Badinage for Trumpet and Piano through jesting ascending arpeggio flourishes and energetic staccato call-and-response passages between theTrumpet and Piano. The comic nature of this piece is successfully portrayed making Bozza's Badinage is an essential fun and varied piece for the Trumpet repertoire.

Bohuslav Martinu (1890-1959) was a prolific Czech composer writing many large scale works. The composer moved to Paris in 1923 where he began experimenting in a variety of composition styles. Sonatine for Trumpet and Piano was composed in 1957 and is adaptable to both the B flat and C Trumpet. Martinu himself was a violinist but he liked to experiment and the mid-1950s saw him move to Nice in France where he began writing Sonatas for wind and brass. Sonatine for Trumpet exemplifies the composer's influence of Stravinsky Debussy and jazz music. The piece is excitingly virtuosic in its use of flutter tonguing complex rhythms chromaticism and ensemble between the Trumpet and Piano. As a varied substantial work for the Trumpet repertoire Martinu's Sonatine is essential to the advanced trumpeter.

Klavierauszug mit Solostimme-Hummel's Trumpet concerto is certainly one of the more well known and popular works in the trumpet repertoire. This is a beautifully lyrical piece with many memorable melodies and sonorous harmonies.This version has been arranged for B flat Trumpet with Piano Accompaniment and has been edited by Norman Richardson. Where many piano (or orchestral) reductions can literally be a reduced orchestral score rather than a properly devised accompaniment this piano part has been carefully voiced so as to be performable. This piece will provide an enjoyable challenge for both the trumpeter and pianist alike.The solo trumpet part is also included on aseparate insert.

Written in 1803 by Johann Nepomuk Hummel (1778-1837) this Trumpet Concerto is a classical piece of the Trumpet repertoire. This version of the concerto features the score and part for Trumpet and band. Evolving at the same period as Beethoven he became as famous and wrote numerous concertos (for Piano Oboe Trumpet Violin and others) operas and some wind music pieces.

This edition is more user-friendly than the others currently available. Neruda (1711-1780) was typical of 18th century musicians travelling and studying in various parts of Eastern Europe and finally settling in Dresden (1750-1780) in the Electoral (chapel) orchestra where he was salaried as a violinist and occasional composer. This concerto was originally composed for a Corno da Caccia (hunting horn) presumed to be something of a hybrid between the natural hornand natural trumpet but has been borrowed by modern trumpet players and is now firmly fixed in the Classical trumpet repertoire.This edition is intended to be more user-friendly than the others currently available: there is a much easier (and dare I say more stylistic) piano accompaniment - any doubling of the solo part has been removed voicing simplified and my premise has been to imagine what it might have been before it was orchestrated rather than trying to cram in every last piece of orchestral detail. Suggested cuts have been indicated which give a short introduction to each movement perfect for auditions recitals or exams. However the bar numbers still tally with the longer original versions which are included should they be required.The dynamics and articulation which I have added incorporate the weight of opinion in current editions and recordings offering more guidance than 'scholarly' editions without being over-prescriptive. There is an appendix with suggested interpretation of trills. Listening to as many different recordings as possible is the best way to assimilate good trills. Brazilian composer Zequinha Abreu’s most renowned piece of traditional choro music Tico Tico is guaranteed to transform any concert setting into a vibrant Rio de Janeiro street party! Composed in 1917 Tico Tico is a fun-loving Latin-style allegro with an 11-bar slow rubato section towards the end arranged by John Iverson for Trumpet or Cornet in Bb with Piano accompaniment. Choro or chorinho is a popular Brazilian music genre originating in 19th century Rio. Consideredthe first characteristically Brazilian genre of urban popular music it is the equivalent of styles like ragtime in the United States tango in Argentina and habanera in Cuba which emerged around the same time as well. Despite its name (which translates to ‘lament’) the music is usually fast with a happy rhythm characterised by virtuosity improvisation and subtle modulations full of syncopation and counterpoint.
