I was very excited about the opportunity and eager to start work but first I had to finish asymphony and a cello concerto. However when I wanted to begin writing the piece for Frankfurt inspiration became silent and remained silent for the next three years apart from the two works for chamber orchestra: I experienced my first writer’s block. This was not my first commission but the first time that I was seriously worried about a piece and started thinking about the commissioning ensemble and its expectations. If anything I held the Ensemble Modern in too high esteem. The ensemble is notorious for being a group of all-rounders who have already seen and done everything. However it was simply time for me to challenge my self-belief as composer and to search out what kind of composer I really am. Whatever the true reason was I still didn’t get anything down on paper. Nothing would gel. In 2008 a stipend from a New York foundation led me to an Italian lavender-castle from the 15th century far away from everything else deep in Umbria. The deadline for my first opera moved dangerously closer but was barely started. The next commission for an orchestra was also waiting in addition to the piece for EM: only empty sheets.  When I came home six weeks later though I hadn’t finished anything the spell was broken. Break-Dance is an obvious next of kin to the two Clarinet trios Vox In Rama and Tattoo For Three. This piece however combines the roaring despair of the first trio with the twisted rhythmical display of the latter. The title of course is a reference to the modern street-dance electric boogie but the very music itself takes the naming most literally indeed: formally and rhythmically after a straightforward head-on opening it breaks into isolated jagged fragments winding up in a bouncing piano cadenza. Albeit not an obvious piano concerto the piano part hovers in the front line the same way the horizontal guy ringing himself on the pavement is doubtless aneye-catcher to passers-by. The springy 'body-language' that kicks off the piece suddenly stiffens and freezes into hard-edged blocks and the real 'dance of breaks' emerges into focus. Break-dance is commissioned by and dedicated to Yvar Mikhashoff and Spectrum. Arranged for 2 Trumpets 3 Trombones and Piano.

Schwarz connaît toutes les subtilités de son instrument.Trumpet Town est une œuvre de commande pour l?Orchestre d?Harmonie de la Police de Haute-Autriche (Polizeiorchester Oberösterreich) placé sous la direction d?Andreas Schwarzenlander. L?œuvre fut donnée en création le 17 novembre 2009 par la formation dédicataire et le trompettiste soliste Franz Wagnermeyer membre de l?ensemble international Ten of the Best et ancien élève du Conservatoire de Musique deVienne.Ce concerto s?ouvre avec un passage en 12/8 d?une grande vivacité. Les divers changements de mesure affectent profondément la pulsation rythmique et la ligne mélodique. La partie soliste est truffée de fioritures techniques. Elle alterne avec des passages tutti proche de l?univers de la musique de film. Le passage central lent presque élégiaque peut être joué au bugle. La reprise est d?une grande exigence pour le soliste et l?orchestre. Armenian composer and pianist Alexandre Aroutiounian (1920-2012) was awarded many prizes for his compositions throughout his career. His Aria and Scherzo for Trumpet and Piano is little-known yet it is a sublime addition to the modern repertoire. Aroutiounian's works have been performed all over the world and he is particularly remembered for his Trumpet Concerto. Melodic and rhythmic characteristics of Armenian music are prominent in Aroutiounian's works further expressing his nationality by use of ashughner (folk minstrel) improvisations. Aria and Scherzo is made up of twomovements the Aria marked as adagio and the Scherzo as allegretto. Tonality is exploited throughout and contains unique uses of rhythm and ensemble. Aroutiounian's Aria and Scherzo is an exciting piece for all advanced trumpeters.
