The music featured in this folio part of a continuing series of books covering the music of the legendary trumpet player/composer consists of original Davis compositions from three different periods. Miles was signed to the Prestige label in the '50s and many of the recordings he made for that label were recorded after Miles had already signed a contract with Columbia Records. There were a number of marathon sessions made to finish out the Prestige agreement. Most of the resulting recordings are regarded as classics today and such tunes as 'Green Haze' and 'Tune Up' are favorites among jazz musicians young and old. Davis' Columbia recordings of 1958-59are prized for the excellence of the material the solos of Cannonball Adderley John Coltrane Wynton Kelly and Bill Evans and the beauty of the recording quality. Kind of Blue included such gems as 'Blue in Green' 'So What' and 'Freddie Freeloader'. Not only is Kind of Blue one of the best-selling albums of all time it kick-started the new jazz shich stressed modes and scales rather than chords. Miles led another legendary quartet in the early '60s with Wayne Shorter Herbie Hancock Ron Carter and Tony Williams. 'Circle' and 'Agitation' became part of the group's active repertoire. The level of soling was consistently excellent and the quartet's appearances at clubs and concert halls were usually sold out.

For Trumpet And Piano-This Sonata by John McCabe was commissioned by Simon Debruslais and derives its underlying material from William Byrd’s motet 'Haec Dies' from his 1591 collection of Cantiones Sacrae. An outline of the motet is “hidden” within the texture of the music but never stated directly. The Sonata employs that beautiful instrument the Flugelhorn (beloved of Vaughan Williams and Miles Davis) for the first two main sections switching to D Trumpet (familiar from Baroque music) for the final part which is faster than the earlier ones. The first section is moderately-paced and obsessively circles around particular intervals notably parallel ornear-parallel fifths (possibly my revenge on the academic world). The middle part of the work is slow framed by very brief scherzando trio-like sections. The piece lasts about 17 minutes.

I was very excited about the opportunity and eager to start work but first I had to finish asymphony and a cello concerto. However when I wanted to begin writing the piece for Frankfurt inspiration became silent and remained silent for the next three years apart from the two works for chamber orchestra: I experienced my first writer’s block. This was not my first commission but the first time that I was seriously worried about a piece and started thinking about the commissioning ensemble and its expectations. If anything I held the Ensemble Modern in too high esteem. The ensemble is notorious for being a group of all-rounders who have already seen and done everything. However it was simply time for me to challenge my self-belief as composer and to search out what kind of composer I really am. Whatever the true reason was I still didn’t get anything down on paper. Nothing would gel. In 2008 a stipend from a New York foundation led me to an Italian lavender-castle from the 15th century far away from everything else deep in Umbria. The deadline for my first opera moved dangerously closer but was barely started. The next commission for an orchestra was also waiting in addition to the piece for EM: only empty sheets.  When I came home six weeks later though I hadn’t finished anything the spell was broken.
