When you are a prodigy, you should study with the best. For Lukas Foss (born Lukas Fuchs), this meant studying orchestration with Felix Wolfes, composition with Noel Gallon, and even flute with Louis Moyse. In 1937, his family moved to the United States, the family name became Foss, and young Lukas would attend the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he would meet fellow classmate Leonard Bernstein. This led to a lifelong friendship of mutual admiration-Bernstein would conduct the world premiere of Time Cycle, and Foss would conduct the premiere of Symphonic Dances from West Side Story. Time Cycle would garner the New York Music Critics Circle Award for 1961 and be hailed as a true masterpiece of American music. Sony Classical has included the premiere recording by Leonard Bernstein and the Columbia Symphony Orchestra with soloist Adele Addison in their remastered series Bernstein Century.

Written for soprano saxophone, marimba and percussion. Time After Time was written for the Yesaroun' Duo (comprising multi-percussionist Sam Solomon & saxophonist Eric Hewitt) and marimbist Nancy Zeltsman. I set out to write a piece that was primarily energetic and rhythmically challenging enough for two percussionist and one honorary percussionist to play. The title refers to the fact that all the material recycles itself at different speeds. The marimba's long, quasi-chorale lines proceed, initially, without noticing the rhythmic shifts and upheaval below. Halfway through the piece, a jagged marimba solo features the instrument's precise, dance-like qualities, and after being joined by the saxophone and percussion, propels the whole ensemble towards the rhythmic and harmonic excesses of the final section.

As most of my instrumental pieces, Joyce is also based on a literary source. My first string quartet (Korrespondenz) transferred thecorrespondence between Leopold and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, at times word by word, to the world of music, whose strong dramatic character effectively reflects the conflicts between father and son. I found the closest literary references to my second string quartet, which takes its listeners to the world of Odysseus and the sirens, in the works of Joyce, Homer and Kafka. The string quartet is enriched with an additional soprano part, which tells the classic story from three different perspectives. The complete title of my second string quartet is The Sirens Cycle, consisting of three movements: Joyce - Homer - Kafka. The twenty-minute-long duration of the first movement of the cycle Joyce allows it to be performed independently. This time, the vocal part accompanied by the strings is replaced by a solo clarinet, which - instead of giving a verbal account of Chapter 11 of Joyce's Ulysses - renders the quite masculine protagonist, Leopold Blooms musing over the attractive barmaids with befittingly vigorous musical gestures. Joyce for clarinet and string quartet immerses in James Joyces unique world and typical imaginative word creations, placing them into the world of musical composition. Peter Eotvos.

Of Time and Passing (2016) is a cycle of three choral songs written specifically for the London-based ensemble, VOCES8, taking into consideration their versatilityand ability to beautifully intone a range of vocal colors with precision and grace.
The first song, I. Life, sets my translation of the poem A Vida by Brazilian poet Olavo Bilac (1865-1918), a poet I discovered while studying Brazilian Portuguese at the University of Michigan. I was drawn both to the simplicity of the text and to the possibilities of teasing out dual contrasting moods. In the beginning and end, this song explores a texture that is very much alive: wave-like contours, throbbing sounds, and plenty of flowing movement. Rising eighth-note motives in particular emphasize the fleetingness of life. But in the middle of the song, the listener is given a slowed-down atmosphere to savor life's beauty.
II. To Everything a Season capitalizes on VOCES8's ability to effectively interpret popular genres a cappella. This ancient text is taken from Ecclesiastes (dated around 300 B.C.) but I set it to a modern, rhythmically-regular and percussive pop-style idiom. Since popular music in whatever era is designedto appeal to a specific ?present time?, it is by its very nature ephemeral, and therefore seemed an apt metaphor to evoke the transitory nature of seasons.
III. Into Your Hands, confines the writing into no more than four parts, often with octave unisons. This creates a more direct and word-focused setting in which the Psalmist?s urgent words are placed at the forefront. Largely homophonic, this song is at times chorale-like, at times madrigal-like,finally relinquishing it?s tension into peaceful rest, proclaiming ?You have redeemed me, O Lord, faithful God??

The song cycle „E las culurs dals tuns“ („And the colours of sounds“) was composed in 2017 to a commission by the Summer Music Days festival in Hitzacker. The cycle in twelve parts is a setting of Romansh texts by Bibi Vaplan, some of which are aphoristic in character. The sound of this wonderful language was something that the composer found particularly attractive. The onomatopoeic aspects of Romansh are especially important in these twelve songs, and time and again they trigger actions in the piano that in turn prompt reactions in the vocal part – this is a process of constant interaction.

Joonas Kokkonen (1921-1996) was one of the post-war Finnish composers who sought to distance himself from the legacy of Sibelius. The cycle Sub rosa - settings of poems by Eeva-Liisa Manner (1973) - is now being published for the first time. The poems by Eeva-Liisa Manner (1921-1995) are from her collection Orfiset laulut (Orphic Songs) published in 1960 drawing on ancient mythology, oriental philosophy and mysticism in her own inimitable, unadorned manner. Poet and composer shake hands in this song cycle: the same landscape looks different depending on the lighting and season. The music represents the sparse, economical Kokkonen at his best; he uses an embryonic motif in a variety of ways and forms. Sub rosa was premiered by Helja Angervo, mezzo-soprano and Izumi Tateno, piano on March 25, 1973. The overall duration is c. 10 minutes.

This cycle contains Aller Augen warten auf dich, Herre SWV 429, one of the composer's most popular vocal works. The twelve four-part motet-style settings published in 1657 demonstrate all the attributes of his mature style, using simple homophonic settings as effectively as demanding polyphony. They represent something of a counterpart to the 1648 Geistliche Chormusik, but here, Schutz paid greater attention to practical use in church services and to the training of the Dresden choirboys.

BachScholar Editions Vol. 86: BACH MEETS RAGTIME: 10 Four-Part Chorales Arranged (Volume 2) (41 pages) was born out of classic ragtime and related style improvisations on selected four-part chorales by J.S. Bach. These arrangements transform Bach’s short chorales into exciting and idiomatic concert pieces for piano while fully retaining the chorales’ original melodies and harmonies. Styles encountered in this collection include two-step rags, cake walk, waltz, etude, cool swing, march macabre, and hoedown. The ten pieces have been assembled in a strategic order so that they may be played in succession as an effective concert cycle. In addition, they may be played singly or in pairs and groups as the performer sees fit. A complete performance lasts approximately 36 minutes. This collection is ideal for piano students, teachers, and concert artists who seek fresh, new, and creative material for study and performance. Keyboard/Theory Published by: BachScholar.

The title refers to three instruments, three movements, and three ways of treating musical time. The tone of the work is serious yet as playful as the title suggests. The first movement, Ratios, opens with a series of seemingly unrelated ideas in tempo ratios of 3:2 and 4:3. As the movement proceeds, the ideas develop, transform, and superimpose in increasingly wide spirals. The slower second movement, Cycles, is a fantasy built on the strict scaffolding of an omnipresent, diatonic cantus firmus set in symmetrically expanding and contracting cycles. The quick finale, Phases, is a moto perpetuo tarantella in which the instruments move in and out of phase as they chase one another. The flowing eighth notes merge and finally unify ideas from the previous movements.

The British rock band Queen, formed in 1970, are one of the most popular bands of all time. The music of Queen already exists in numerous instrumental arrangements at all kinds of levels. However, arranger Philip Sparke has taken a unique approach: he has created an exceptional medley in a challenging, symphonic style from four of their greatest hits: 'Bohemian Rhapsody', 'Bicycle Race', 'Who Wants to Live Forever' and 'We Are the Champions.'.

for SSAA (with divisions) unaccompanied Cecilia McDowall's fresh and appealing style is amply displayed in this cycle, subtitled 'Three Shakespeare Songs'. In total, six Shakespeare texts are used, and McDowall's response encompasses a fleet-footed impression of Scottish fiddle music, a gorgeously plangent slow movement, and a helter-skelter finale that broadens to a mysteriously pitchless ending. Also available for SSATB.
