This suite was inspired most notably by the saxophone quartets of Phil Woods and was written in a conscious attempt to wed certain stylistic elements of classical and jazz music. The players are not asked to improvise, but the piece does feature sections that sound spontaneous and freely created. The piece is difficult, but no more so than other quartets, like Glazunov and Desenclos, that are standard repertoire for this instrumentation. Talented high school and all college groups will find success working on this piece. The first movement, subtitled Danse Macabre, is ominous, dark, sometimes bluesy, and is propelled along by the use of intricate counterpoint and an improvised sounding solo section for the tenor saxophone.

Three short movements pay homage to the cradle of modern wind band music. Three Places in England is an interesting departure from the style that Jack Stamp is best known for. The second movement is based on the English folk song O Waly Waly sometimes known as The Gift of Love.

The Second and Third Quartets were conceived at the same time; indeed, their composition intermingled, over half of No. 3 being sketched before No. 2 was completed. Accordingly, they share similar material but, like the intertwining blood of cousins, their natures differ: No. 2 being somewhat acerbic and declamatory, No. 3 more lyric and gentler. An annunicatory 'leaping motive' (derived from a motto generated by my name) opens Quartet No. 2 and inhabits the course of the piece as a cyclical binding-force. A five-note motive, usually very deliberate, also keeps recurring like an insistent caller. All three movements are based on tonal centers (I on B and E, II on D, III on C) and the harmonic 'grammar' spoken tends to recall the jazz world of my youth. To hopefully achieve a certain classical ambience was one of the goals of this piece, and all three movements have traditional forms. The first movement is a modified Sonata-Allegro design, with a severely-truncated recapitulation balanced by a lengthy, and decaying Coda. The second movement is a set of strophic variants and an epilogue interspersed with both solo ritornelli and first-movement material (the motto and the five-note motive) in the nature of a fantasia-like 'call-and-response.' It is dedicated to the memory of the American mezzo-soprano Jan DeGaetani. The third movement is a modified Rondo (ABACBA) which evolves out of the opening motto. All three movements make much use of canonic stretti, similar gestures, and repetition. For example, the climax of movement III's Rondo throws the first movement back at us again, as if the players were reluctant to let it go, so that the entire piece could perhaps be viewed as a single large, extended, Sonata movement, with introduction and Coda. An annunicatory ‘leaping motive’ (derived from a motto generated by my name) opens Quartet No. 2 and inhabits the course of the piece as a cyclical binding-force. A five-note motive, usually very deliberate, also keeps recurring like an insistent caller. All three movements are based on tonal centers (I on B and E, II on D, III on C) and the harmonic ‘grammar’ spoken tends to recall the jazz world of my youth. To hopefully achieve a certain classical ambience was one of the goals of this piece, and all three movements have traditional forms. The first movement is a modified Sonata-Allegro design, with a severely-truncated recapitulation balanced by a lengthy, and decaying Coda. The second movement is a set of strophic variants and an epilogue interspersed with both solo ritornelli and first-movement material (the motto and the five-note motive) in the nature of a fantasia-like ‘call-and-response.’ It is dedicated to the memory of the American mezzo-soprano Jan DeGaetani. The third movement is a modified Rondo (ABACBA) which evolves out of the opening motto. All three movements make much use of canonic stretti, similar gestures, and repetition. For example, the climax of movement III’s Rondo throws the first movement back at us again, as if the players were reluctant to let it go, so that the entire piece could perhaps be viewed as a single large, extended, Sonata movement, with introduction and Coda.

The American state of Arkansas is often called 'the natural state' and 'the land of opportunity.' This piece belongs to Jacob de Haan's series of musical montages depicting various states in the USA, including Dakota, Oregon and Virginia. Arkansas is a suite in three movements based on a well-known native American folk song. It appears as a ballade, variations and finally accompanies a jazzy rhythm. The folk song helps provide continuity throughout the three movements. A perfect addition to any concert.Arkansas kent meerdere bijnamen. Der amerikanische Bundesstaat Arkansas tragt den Spitznamen The Natural State oder The Land of Opportunity. Lo stato americano dell'Arkansas e anche chiamato The Natural State o anche The Land of Opportunity.

Diamond Concerto was commissioned by Musikverein Mörschied from Germany - Dr. Eric Grandjean, conductor - for a special concert featuring Steven Mead as guest soloist. Together they gave the world premiere on 28th April 2012 in the town theatre of Idar-Oberstein.The commission is a highlight in the 30-year friendship between composer and soloist, which has included many mutual CD projects and concerts and, now, a concerto. Sparke had Steven Mead’s special euphonium sound in his head throughout the composition process and made free use of the variety of styles which the world-renowned virtuoso has made his own during his highly successful solo career. The village ofMörschied lies to the west of Frankfurt am Main in the area known as the German Road of Precious Stones, which is famous for its thriving gem industry. Because of this it was decided to give the commission a local connection by choosing the title, Diamond Concerto. Each of the three movements is named after a famous diamond:1 EARTH STARis rather stern in mood, opening with a free fantasy for the soloist over a static chord from the band. This leads to an Allegro Moderato in minor mode where small motives are gradually repeated and developed by both band and soloist.2 OCEAN DREAMuses a varied quote from the composer’s Music for Battle Creek, including a melting slow melody that was originally written with Steven Mead in mind.3 BLUE HEARTwas written, at Steven Mead’s suggestion, in bebop style and takes the form of a jazz waltz. The quasi-improvisatory central section features a call-and-response passage for the soloist and upper woodwinds.Soloist: Difficulty 6Diamond Concerto is available for euphonium and piano (AMP 374-401) as well as for euphonium and concert band (AMP 354-010). 3 Dances is a Suite in three movements for 2 solo tubas and big band (2 alto saxophones, tenor saxophone, bariton saxophone, 4 trumpets, horn in F, 3 trombones, bass trombone, xylophone, vibraphone, marimba, piano, bass guitar, drum set) written in 3 movements. It is a typical example of the versatile composing talent of Roland Szentpali. His approach to jazz is well structured, with subtle fast or slow groovy sequences of the different instrumental and rhythm sections, stimulating (and how !) the two solo tubas interacting with each other. I. Blow On Fire starts with a free cadenza that is an introduction merging into fast elements which appear all along this movement. The two tubas start to play once the melodic elements burn, and from then develop their own dynamic shifts. II. Oriental Flavors is another kind of groove (as the movement title suggests), beginning with a short opening of the trombone section falling into secco rhythm that beats in contrasts with the stimulating lyrical intervention by the two tubists. III. Cinder Dance has a specific introduction that leads the musicians and the audience on the path of various trances over several uneven time signatures. At a certain point, the 2 tubas fly through cadencial sequences just over the rhythm section, before ending on a long collective and steamy final progression. World premiere and recording premiere: May 13-14, 2017 in the L. Austin Weeks Center for Recording and Performance at the Frost School of Music, University of Miami - Coral Gables, Florida, USA with the award winning Frost Concert Jazz Band conducted by John Daversa, and soloists Aaron Tindall and Roland Szentpali on tuba.

Berg's fantastic setting of this beloved American Christmas spiritual for advanced tenor-bass choirs tells a story of hope and meaning. The various textures throughout the a cappella arrangement with solos add much variety and musical interest. A holiday programming must!.This beloved American Christmas Spiritual, like all spirituals and/or folk songs, tells a story. This is a story of hope and meaning. The introductory solo call and response (mm. 1-7) is hymnic in nature, just to get us started. (Think of it as an effective head fake!) The entrance at m. 8 from the upper three voices (we'll call them the trio part henceforth) is pivotal. They set the stage for the conversation between the singers and the soloist for the rest of the song. From this point, the song is basically a Jazz Trio in vocal form. The bass singers take on the role of the cool dude in the back wearing dark glasses and a beret playing the string bass. They provide the driving force for the forward movement of the entire song. The trio part, basically tenors 1 & 2 and baritones, take on the role of the keyboard providing chordal structure and syncopation. Their job is to fill the listener's ear with sound and rhythm. The soloist tells the story using the known melody and text with appropriate improv opportunities to keep the listeners focused on the message of the song. There is enough repetition to make for easy learning, but this also means that the chords need to snap into position cleanly every time. The Verses are easily identified (there are three) and presented with some small variations in Verse 3 (see mm. 56-58...this only happens once). The Refrain (mm. 30-37) is the part of the song where the singers switch from the Jazz Trio role and actually become a Men's Choral Ensemble. This Refrain is repeated after Verse 3 at mm. 66-71. Between verses 2 & 3, there is not a refrain. Instead, there is a bridge repeated from the introductory material, but used this time to move us into a new key signature. This can be a very exciting moment for the singers as well as the listeners! Measures 72-75 is known in the business as a vamp. It can be repeated once and then move on, OR it can be repeated multiple times, depending on the comfort level of the soloist and the response of the audience. It is important that there be a clear signal from the conductor as to how to end the vamp and move effectively to the actual coda of the song. The ending should be sung with tight control that only looks like reckless abandon! Faces bright; words clean; melody clear; rhythms precise! Enjoy. This beloved American Christmas Spiritual, like all spirituals and/or folk songs, tells a story. This is a story of hope and meaning. Their job is to fill the listener’s ear with sound and rhythm. The soloist tells the story using the known melody and text with appropriate improv opportunities to keep the listeners focused on the message of the song. There is enough repetition to make for easy learning, but this also means that the chords need to “snap into position†cleanly every time. The Verses are easily identified (there are three) and presented with some small variations in Verse 3 (see mm. 56-58…this only happens once). The Refrain (mm. 30-37) is the part of the song where the singers switch from the “Jazz Trio†role and actually become a “Men’s Choral Ensembleâ€. This Refrain is repeated after Verse 3 at mm. 66-71. Between verses 2 & 3, there is not a refrain. Instead, there is a bridge repeated from the introductory material, but used this time to move us into a new key signature. This can be a very exciting moment for the singers as well as the listeners!Measures 72-75 is known in the business as a “vampâ€. It can be repeated once and then move on, OR it can be repeated multiple times, depending on the comfort level of the soloist and the response of the audience. It is important that there be a clear signal from the conductor as to how to end the “vamp†and move effectively to the actual coda of the song. The ending should be sung with tight control that only looks like reckless abandon!Faces bright; words clean; melody clear; rhythms precise! Enjoy.

A three-movement piece which combines orchestral vocabulary with a variety of groove oriented music such as Latin, jazz, and American folk music. It can be performed either with any size string orchestra and winds (set includes 8,6,4,4,4,4 strings and 2 sets of woodwind parts), or with string sextet (2 violins, 2 violas, cello, bass) and woodwind quintet (flute, oboe, clarinet, French horn, bassoon). The first two movements, allegro moderato and lento, showcase the lyrical side of the saxophone. The third movement, allegro molto, involves a good deal of virtuosity and requires improvisational skills over modal chords.

Also available for trombone and piano (HL44007077) Philip Sparke's Trombone Concerto was written for Olaf Ott, principal trombonist with the Berlin Philharmonic. The concerto is in traditional three-movement form and the whole work could be seen as a dramatic soliloquy for the soloist, who starts in earnest and agitated mood but, as the concerto progresses, is able to take a more optimistic tone before ending the work with what could be called a “symphonic samba.†Movement 1 begins darkly until the solo part introduces a more positive theme - only to be “overruled†by a faster, troubled accompaniment; the movement closes over a sombre drum ostinato. Movement 2 opens with a heartfelt “plea†in the accompaniment that is echoed by the soloist, who then plays a simple chorale melody introducing a delicate central section. A chant-like tune leads to a joyous climax, heralding a return of the opening material. Movement 3 casts all troubles aside in a joyful samba - a jazz-influenced central tune explores the higher ranges of the trombone before the samba rhythms set up a “contest†between trombone and piano. The soloist is the eventual “winner†(of course) and celebrates by reintroducing the samba melody before bringing the work to a virtuosic close.

This concert work, the latest of Jacob de Haan works based on American states, is a suite in three movements, based on a well-known folk tune from Arkansas. In the course of this varied work the folk song appears in its complete form and in fragments, in major and in minor, as a ballad in a lyrical orchestration, as a blues, accompanied by a jazzy rhythm and at the end again in its pure form. In the process, all instrumental groups of the brass band get their chance to shine!De Amerikaanse staat Arkansas wordt wel ‘The Natural State’ of ‘The Land of Opportunity’ genoemd.

Best playability and musical spirit - this is what characterizes the music of Bertold Hummel who died in 2002, and why his music must be part of the repertoire of any amateur and semi-professional orchestra. The 'Oregon Symphony' occupies a special position in his oeuvre: it was written by Hummel for the typically American symphonic wind bands, requiring almost 100 musicians, including 15 clarinets in three groups of five alone, as well as four piccolos and six flutes, bass clarinet, bassoons, saxophones, trumpets, horns, tubas and the typically American sousaphone, and five percussionists. The work consists of four movements; in the rousing finale, Hummel mixes jazz motifs with popular themes and even weaves the anthem of the State of Oregon in the final music. For getting better acquainted with this music, the first movement is also separately available ('Symphonische Ouverture', SHS 1001).Picc. * 2 * 2 * Klar. in Es * 3 * Bassklar. in B * 2 Altsax. in Es * Tenorsax. in B * Baritonsax. in Es * 2 - 4 * 3 (Korn.) * 3 * Tenorhr. in B (Bar.) * 2 - P. Summer Solstice is a 19-minute concerto in three movements, composed for solo clarinet with a colorfully-textured string orchestra. The piano reduction is comfortably voiced for recital use. Dorff's joy in writing for his own instrument is readily heard in the warm cantabile writing and gracefully idiomatic passagework. Drawing inspiration from the elegance of Mozart's concerto and the rhythmic grit of Copland's, Dorff's concerto is a true hybrid of jazz-inspired language with classical form and counterpoint. The Philadelphia Inquirer has written, Summer Solstice is light without being insubstantial, melodic without being obvious. It has an invariably American sound. Orchestral score and parts are available on rental. Full score is also available for sale as study score (416-41604) or large score (416-41604L)._____________________________________Text from the scanned back cover:Summer Solstice (Concerto for Clarinet and Strings)The Philadelphia Inquirer has written “Summer Solstice is light without being insubstantial, melodic without being obvious. Fasten Your Seatbelt is a septet in two movements for solo euphonium (with alternative parts for solo trombone or solo tenor saxophone), alto saxophone, trumpet, bass guitar, electric piano, drum set and marimba/congas. It is a typical example of the versatile composing talent of Roland Szentpali. His approach to jazz is well structured, with virtuoso written sequences over a dynamic rhythm section sustaining the three melodic wind instruments (with optional improvisation spaces for them). I. Hunting Instinct is a 7/4 speedy groove music running over long basso continuo ostinati of the rhythm section including collectiv virtuoso intrusions of the wind instruments and improvised sequences. II. Transfer Passenger is pushing another kind of speedy groove, here on a more traditional 4/4, inspired by the human traffic jam in crowded international airports... Indeed, fasten your seatbelt... World premiere: 30th of June 2017, Theater 'de Schalm' in Veldhoven, the Netherlands with the Jazz Combo of “The Band of the Royal Netherlands Army Mounted Regiment and soloist Rodin Rosendahl on the euphonium.

An outstanding work for soloist and band, this distinctive composition focuses on three unique performance styles. Based on quartal harmonies and melodic structures, Intrada is technically challenging, yet quite accessible to the more advanced high school or collegiate students. A rubato, quazi-improvised jazz style is required in the second movement (Recitative), with the Rondo written in a more traditional, classical style. The band accompaniment is very playable, allowing for the showcasing of your trumpet, saxophone or euphonium soloist. Don't miss this opportunity to WOW your audiences!
