About William Walton Edition
In March 2014 Oxford University Press published the last volume in its magnificent William Walton Edition, the only complete critical edition of a 20th-century British composer's oeuvre. All 24 volumes are handsomely printed and bound. Walton's entire output is now available to scholars and performers in a definitive and fully practical edition, based on the form in which the composer ultimately wished his music to be performed. Steele's superb song-cycle Autumn Sequence was written for the pupils of Stockport Grammar School, and is scored for speaker, solo voices, chorus, flute or piccolo or recorder, tubular bells, handbells, organ pedal and piano, being the rather idiosyncratic resources then available at the school. It was first performed on October 3rd 1969 in the schools Hallam Hall, where the composer had been responsible for the specification of the recently installed organ. Douglas Steele himself played the piano part in his own inimitable style extending and improvising the cadenzas between the movements. A recording is available on Campion Cameo 2040/1 featuring Richard Baker narrating and choirs from Carlisle Cathedral, with John Turner on recorder.Autumn Sequence can be heard on the album Autumn Sequence: The Music of Douglas Steele and his circle.

Jones wrote this work in 1958 for a small group session with his two brothers Hank (piano) and Elvin (drums) and is in the album Keepin' Up With The Joneses. The title refers to the three brothers plus another Jones, Eddie, who was the bass player on the session...therefore Three and One. David Fletcher, a member of the award winning University of Illinois Jazz Trombone Ensemble under the direction of Jim Pugh arranged this great chart for Trombone Quintet and rhythm section. It is about 7-8 minutes in length and includes improvised jazz solos for Bass Trombone and 2nd Trombone and is appropriate for advanced performers.

One of my greatest pleasures in writing a concerto is exploring the new world that opens for me each time I enter the sometimes alien, but always fascinating, world of a solo instrument or instruments. For me, the challenge is to discover the deepest nature of the solo instrument (its karma, if you will) and to allow that essential character to guide the shape and form of the work and the nature of the interaction between soloists and orchestra. In recent years, many of us have become more aware of the musical world outside the Western tradition of musics that follow different procedures and spring from other aesthetics. And contemporary percussionists have opened many of these worlds to us, as they have ventured around the globe, participating in Brazilian Samba schools, studying Gamelan and African drumming with local experts, collecting instruments from Asia and Africa and South America and the South Pacific, widening our horizons in the process. I will never forget our first meeting in Toronto when Nexus invited me into their world of hundreds of exciting percussion instruments. The vast array of instruments in the collection of the Nexus ensemble is truly global in scope as well as offering a thrilling sound-universe. I was inspired by the incredible range of sound and moved by the fact that so many of these instruments were musical reflections of a spiritual dimension. After long consideration, I decided that it would not only be impossible, but even undesirable for this Western-tradition-steeped composer to attempt to use these instruments in a culturally authentic way. My goal was an existential kind of authenticity: searching instead for universal ideas that would be true to both myself and the performers while acknowledging the traditional uses of the instruments. Since many percussion instruments are associated with various kinds of ritual, I decided that I would allow that concept to shape my piece. Rituals is in four movements, each issuing from a ritual associated with percussion, but with the orchestral interaction providing an essential element in the musical form. I. Invocation alludes to the traditions of invoking the spirit of the instruments, or the gods, or the ancestors before performing. II. Ambulation moves from a processional, through march and dance to fantasy based on all three. III. Remembrances alludes to traditions of memorializing. IV. Contests progresses from friendly competition games, contests to a suggestion of a battle of big band drummers, to warlike exchanges. In the 2nd and 4th movements, another percussion tradition, improvisation, is employed. Written into these movements are a number of seeds for improvisation. Indications in the score call for the soloists to improvise in three different ways, marked A for percussion alone; marked B for percussion with and in response to the orchestra; and C where the percussionists are free to add and embellish the written parts. These improvisations should grow out of and embellish previous motives and gestures in the movement.

I suppose as artists we are always searching for metaphors that speak directly to the musics we perform to guide us and inspire. The music on this CD pushes our boundaries of what could be considered normal music making and instead moves us into sound worlds that expand what a choral ensemble can produce. This recording, which documents an almost three-year exploration into improvisation in various forms, contains works for choral ensembles that create new sound worlds in and of themselves. We are happy to present to the world a young composer from our midst, Sam Scheibe. His virtuous setting of O magnum mysterium introduces a gifted and deeply insightful compositional voice. Sanctitude is an expansive improvisation combining choir, soprano saxophone, Gregorian chant, Arabic chant, and melodies into a sound world that I hope will document the frontier of a new world of choral performance. The techniques employed in this improvisation are documented in the new text Discovering Choral Improvisation through Chant (GIA, 2020). The CD opens with a three-movement work, The Dreams That Remain by Thomas LaVoy, yet another composer from the Williamson Voices family who has adapted the sound world of this ensemble into a work of beauty and honesty. All of the works on this CD create Auroras of their own that touch us deeply and cover our senses with streamers of light. I thank my friend, James Whitbourn, for conducting on three of the tracks and for crafting the Sanctitude improvisation. Hopefully the sounds on this CD will, as Makoto Fujimara says, bring you outside of yourself, and pull you to look at the [life's] horizon and to see beyond. — James Jordan  .

With this magnificent setting of Psalm 136 from the Psalmen Davids of 1619, Heinrich Schütz broke new ground: he brought the court trumpet ensemble into the realm of art music (similar to Michael Praetorius at around the same time). Alongside the trumpet ensemble, a five-part ripieno choir ensures musical splendor, whilst the leading role is given two two favoriti choirs, one high (SSTT) and one low (TTBB, scored for tenor and three trombones). Schütz did not write out the trumpet ensemble parts, but made do with notating just the middle part, around which the other parts were to improvise. For this critical edition, the trumpet ensemble is available separately in a reconstruction by the internationally-famous baroque trumpet specialist Edward H. Tarr. This edition is also used for the recording of the Psalm with the Dresdner Kammerchor conducted by Hans-Christoph Rademann. Score available separately - see item CA.2004500.
