Aulis Sallinen was born in 1935 in Salmi on the northern shore of Lake Ladoga (which the Soviet Union claimed in 1944). His early musical experience was playing the violin. Improvising (including jazz) on the piano led him to write his first compositions as a teenager. After studying with Aarre Merikanto and Joonas Kokkonen at the Sibelius Academy, he joined the staff there. He was Administrator of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra (1960-69); Secretary and member of the Board (1958-73), then Chairman (1971-73) of the Finnish Composers' Society; member of the board of TEOSTO (Finnish copyright society) from 1970-84, then Chairman from 1988-90; he also served for several years on the Board of the Finnish National Opera. Here is the Facsimile of the Sixth Symphony that was composed over 1989-1990, and commissioned and first performed by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.

The two string quartets by Camille Saint-Saens appear here in one volume for the first time. The String Quartet No. 1 in E Minor op. 112 (1899) numbers among the composer's most successful pieces and is emblematic of the genre in the French repertoire. Here Saint-Saens displays his fully developed mastery and presents the wealth of his inspiration and musical prowess. Only three years before his death, he surprisingly composed the String Quartet No. 2 in G major op. 153 (1918) which, with its classicistic stance, represents a homage to the masters of the late eighteenth century Viennese School. In addition to the first critical edition of the two string quartets, this second volume of theOeuvres instrumentales completesde Camille Saint-Saens includes the first version of the final movementInterlude et Finalfrom the second string quartet, the fragmentary beginning of an early work for string quartet as well as the previously unknown and unpublished Adagio from Symphony No. 2 in A Minor op. 55 for string quintet. An extensive Introduction (Fr/Eng/Ger) illuminates the genesis, historical performance and reception histories of all these pieces; the Critical Report (Fr) provides information about all the sources and their variants.

Richard Strauss's last completed tone poem is regarded as the pinnacle of his art of orchestration: Now I've finally learned to orchestrate, he himself is once supposed to have said about it after the dress rehearsal. The single-movement Alpine symphony that we know today ultimately evolved - over almost 15 years - from the original drafts of an artist's tragedy, titled Der Antichrist. Eine Alpensinfonie [The Antichrist. An Alpine Symphony] up to the stage of the last sketches. With unprecedented plasticity, the work showcases a (metaphysical?) mountain hike with stops in the forest, at the waterfall, on the alpine pasture and, of course, at the summit. Apropos alpine pastures: up to the score's fair copy stage, Strauss envisaged a high and a low alphorn for the section Auf der Alm [On the Alpine Pasture] and the well-known Dulioh theme, though for various reasons first detailed in our new Urtext edition, these exotic instruments did not find their way into the printed version. In the new edition, the editor, Nick Pfefferkorn, reproduces the alphorn passages in small print, also adding two alphorn parts to the performance material, besides evaluating the corrections made by Walter Seifert at Strauss's request.First Urtext edition since the first editionEvaluation of all available sources, including sketches and the score corrected by Walter Seifert Extensive preface on the work's compositional history and receptionDetailed Critical ReportFacsimile pages.

The performance material available up till now for Dvorákâ??s sun-filled cheerful Symphony no. 8 has been notorious for its myriad mistakes. The challenge of correcting it has now been taken over by the editor Jonathan Del Mar. He has taken into account the engraverâ??s copy, which was actually discovered in a trash bin at Novelloâ??s in 1964. Its title page bears the words â??Copied from my original manuscriptâ? in Dvorákâ??s hand. This source proves that many of the readings contained in the first edition and faithfully adopted in all subsequent editions, were simply slips of the copyistâ??s pen. This new edition with score and orchestral parts in an enlarged format is accompanied by a detailed Critical Commentary on the sources and alternative readings. It also contains important facsimile pages to clarify problematical readings.
