Haydn’s “Sturm und Drang” symphonies along with the London and the Paris symphonies belong to his most popular works today. The “Sturm und Drang” works contain not only masterpieces such as the already published “Farewell-Symphony” and the “Maria Theresia” symphony but also gems such as the recently published “La Passione” symphony (2013) and now the Symphony in B major No. 46.The publication of this symphony represents a continuation of the collaboration between Bärenreiter and the Henle publishing company in the areas of large vocal compositions, operas and symphonic works. The Symphony in B major is based on the Henle Complete Edition of the “Works of Joseph Haydn” and is published with a full score and large format performing material on sale.

This work, composed in 1971, was intended for professional performers. It was written with post-Webern, free twelve-tone technique its sound is characterized by frequent use of all twelve notes in the construction of the harmony, and by wide spacing of dissonant intervals or the crowding of them into dense blocks. These short character pieces contain a great variety of gestures and emotions, ranging from witty playfulness through violent Sturm und Drang behaviour that shatters every framework, to mournful lamentation and hope of hymnic redemption.

Associating the term “Sturm und Drang” with Haydn’s creative period from ca. 1765 to ca. 1772 is considered controversial among scholars, but it does describe a unique group of works within his symphonies: works characterised by an impetuous, colourful tonal language, featuring minor keys prominently, with rapid tempo sequences and effects taken from contemporary opera such as tremolos and recitatives. The Symphony in E minor Hob. I:44 was composed towards the end of this creative period and certainly showcases the “Sturm und Drang” dramatic style with its resolute unison main theme in the opening movement, a sustained dance and sensitive slow movement as well as a Presto finale. The work received the nickname “Mourning” Symphony in recent reception history because of its melancholic character and the anecdote that Haydn chose the third movement (Adagio) as his funeral music.Continuing the cooperation between Bärenreiter and the G. Henle publisher regarding Haydn’s large-scale choral works, operas and symphonies, this edition is based on the G. Henle Complete Edition of the “Works of Joseph Haydn”.

Edward Fairlie's Storm and Urge is a significant work for wind band and portrays a journey of emotional turbulence. The title comes from the German “Sturm und Drang,” a literary and musical movement of the late 1700s which focused on extremes of emotion. Opening with a simple and reflective theme, we are then taken through a range of emotional settings from uncertainty to resistance, and then calm resolve and self-knowledge. With a variety of textures and vivid imagery, this is a masterful work for the contemporary ensemble. Duration: 9:00(Recorded by the University of Minnesota Wind Ensemble – Ingrid Martin, conductor).

The composer Joseph Martin Kraus was born in the same year as Mozart, and like Salzburg's famous son, he was highly gifted and died too young. But in recent years he has received more attention. And rightly so! The Miserere was composed in 1773 during his student years in Erfurt and is evidence of his technical abilities at the age of just seventeen. Even in this early work Kraus showed himself to be a true exponent of the musical Sturm und Drang movement. For all its youthful carefreeness and originality in terms of compositional technique, the music is characterised by great seriousness and depth of expression, abruptness, and at times also brusqueness.

The composer Joseph Martin Kraus was born in the same year as Mozart, and like Salzburg's famous son, he was highly gifted and died too young. But in recent years he has received more attention. And rightly so! He wrote his Requiem in 1775 at the age of 19, probably for his local parish church in Buchen in the Odenwald. Even in this early work Kraus showed himself to be a true exponent of the musical Sturm und Drang movement. Haydn composed his Symphony No. 77 along with his Symphonies Nos. 76 and 78 for a planned journey to England that never took place. Nonetheless, H.C. Robbins Landon calls these works the “English symphonies” as they are stylistically closely linked to the “London Bach”, Johann Christian Bach. Haydn himself, in a letter of 1783 to his Parisian publisher Charles-Georges Boyer, described the symphonies as ‘Leicht und nicht vil Concertirend”, meaning that they were light in spirit and did not contain extensive solo passages but rather a clear sense of classical form.Continuing the cooperation between Bärenreiter and the G. Henle publisher regarding Haydn’s large-scale choral works, operas and symphonies, this edition is based on the G. Henle Complete Edition of the “Works of Joseph Haydn”. The Bärenreiter catalogue now includes the complete performance material for several “Sturm und Drang” symphonies as well as all the London and Paris symphonies.

This work is an energetic introduction to "Sturm und Drang" style written by the father of modern astronomy. Dotted rhythms, hooked bowings, and detailed attention to dynamic changes allow for many opportunities to work on fundamentals. Chromatic fingerings are a must: violin 1 uses third position, and all other parts use extensions.

Wolff’s Concerto in C major for flute, strings and basso continuo has the customary three movements (Allegro Moderato, Affettuoso, Allegro), all of which are extended in form and poetic in expression, often using striking dynamic contrasts and orchestral unison writing in a way that prefigures the Sturm und Drang of the 1760s. The third movement is a true ‘applause finale’, putting the soloist through some challenging technical hoops.

The Violin Sonata No. 1 in E minor, op. 73, a Grand Sonata for Violin and Piano, occupies an important position in Joachim Raff's oeuvre: it reflects numerous artistic, aesthetic, biographical, and reception-historical aspects characteristic of Raff. The work was composed in Weimar in 1854, when Raff was going through a process of artistic self-discovery. He increasingly distanced himself from his mentor Franz Liszt and intensively explored Wagner as well as the ideal of absolute music - this is also reflected in the music of the sonata. While Raff described the first two movements as objectified, he perceived the last two movements as a piece of him, that is, not free of extra-musical influences. The 1st movement, with its expansive main theme, is reminiscent of Mendelssohn; the 2nd movement reveals the refinement of classical-romantic work with musical material. The 3rd movement, with its partly rhythmic, virtuoso accompanying figures and harmonically advanced passages, allows a deeply romantic, almost tormented insight into a soul life a la Sturm und Drang. The partly irascible last movement revisits already familiar themes and thus creates a musical framework. In collaboration with the Joachim-Raff-Archiv Lachen (CH)First Urtext Edition of the Grand Sonata for Violin and Piano.

Haydn’s Symphony in G major Hob. I:81 comes from a series of three symphonies completed in late 1784 (nos. 81, 80 and 79, presumably in that order). No autograph score survives for Hob. I:81, thus our Urtext edition is based on copyists’ manuscripts and first editions. As with so many of his symphonies, Haydn wrote this one to provide new music for his employer, Prince Nikolaus Esterházy.Continuing the collaboration between Bärenreiter and the G. Henle publishing company regarding Haydn’s large-scale choral works, operas and symphonies, this edition is based on the G. Henle Complete Edition of the Works of Joseph Haydn. Bärenreiter has now published the complete performance material for several Sturm und Drang symphonies and all the London and Paris symphonies (Nos. 81 to 104).

(Thomas Enselein).
