Among the most intriguing of this pioneering American composer’s works, Three Songs on poems of Carl Sandburg is scored for Contralto with Oboe, Percussion, and Piano, plus an optional orchestra. The study score includes an essay introducing Crawford’s unique work in historical contexts as she sought a new musical language accessible to the many, while remaining uncompromisingly avant-garde.

Ian Venables' setting of four poems of A.E. Housman originally scored for tenor solo, string quartet and piano, here arranged for tenor and piano. Lyrical pieces of intermediate difficulty, sometimes elegiac, sometimes angry. Written in 2004 but very much in the English song tradition of Finzi, Gurney and Warlock these are therefore ideal recital companions to those composers.

The Two Songs on American Poems were composed in late May and early June of 2011 by candlelight at my rustic waterfront cabin on a remote island off the northwest coast of Washington State. It was in this locale that I havecompleted a number of works over the years, including the Lux Aeterna, O Magnum Mysterium, Nocturnes, Canticle/O Vos Omnes and others. Prayer was written in memory of Michael Jasper Gioia, Dana and Mary Gioia's infant son, whosebrief life was tragically ended by SIDS.Mr. Gioia served as Chair of the National Endowment for the Arts from 2003-2010 and has authored several books of poems, numerous anthologies, articles, essays and two opera libretti. Amonghis many awards are the American Book Award and Presidential Citizens Medal. He currently holds the Judge Widney Chair of Poetry and Public Policy at the University of Southern California. Sure on this Shining Night was originallycomposed as a choral piece, the third movement of my Nocturnes on poems by Rilke, Neruda and Agee. Rod Gilfry, an international star of opera, recital and musical theater, premiered the mixed duet version with his daughter, Carin,in 2009. He is Professor of Vocal Studies at the USC Thornton School of Music. Both he and Mr. Gioia are national treasures. The Two Songs are designed as a pair but may be sung independently - when paired, Sure On This ShiningNight should begin immediatelyfollowing the final, sustained chord of Prayer with no break in between the songs. Both of these songs, premiered by Mr. Gilfry accompanied by the composer at a USC Visions & Voices tribute to DanaGioia on September 27, 2011, have their roots in the American musical theater and should be sung as such.

Elias: I first came across Irina Ratushinskaya's poetry when the collection 'No, I'm Not Afraid' was published in England in early May 1986. The poems, the various circumstances in which they were written and the poet's integrity, commitment and appalling situation (she was still imprisoned) all had a tremendous impact upon me. I was drawn inexorably into the world she describes so vividly. The powerful imagery of resistance, the acceptance of shattering realities and the fantasies of different kinds of escape made poetry of truly universal significance and urgency, and the idea of a setting for voice and large orchestra followed immediately. Each of the settings (in Russian) is self-contained and quite different in mood and orchestration. However, I consider the songs as one piece, and the whole cycle is performed without a break. All the basic musical material, themes and motifs for the entire work are stated in the first few pages, and the order of the poems was chosen to provide an overall musical and dramatic shape that attempts to link them together and to reflect more than the immediate meaning of the individual poems.

Sofia Gubaidulina took Christian Morgenstern’s collection of poems “Gallow Songs†as the starting point for her own song cycle. Gubaidulina adapted 15 of Morgenstern’s seemingly childlike, formally simple poems, which are full of linguistic playfulness, for mezzo-soprano, double bass and percussion. In her settings, the composer subtly explores the ambiguities of Morgenstern’s poems and transforms their grotesque imagery into unique miniatures of sound. 14 of these songs are also available in a version for mezzo-soprano, flute, double bass, bayan and percussion.

SUMMER SONGS was written for the 30th anniversary of the Skaneateles Music Festival in central New York state. It began as a set of songs using poetry by several writers in that region to be accompanied by a small chamber group of instruments. Eventually the work transformed into something more intriguing to me: a suite of instrumental movements that “comment†on the individual poems which are rst narrated, but not sung.
