Sonatina #2 For Cello And Piano

'Apart from the piano the cello is my favourite instrument. I taught myself how to play it while still at school then took lessons with John Snowdon when I was a student at the R.C.M.. I had to give the cello up to concentrate on other things but my love for the instrument lingered on and in the past few years I have written works for two four and eight cellos so it seemed logical to write something for one hence this Sonatina! Two volumes entitled Cello Meets Piano edited and published by Árpád Pejtsik were issued many years ago by the Könemann Music Budapest. The first edition was quickly sold out and no further editions followed. EMB has undertaken to issue a new edition entitled Cello & Piano with the content unchanged. The two volumes contain a selection from 200 years of music. Eight Baroque sonatas are included apart from the famous D minor one by Corelli there are some that are appearing in a modern edition for the first time in 300 years. In addition to cyclical works (Haydn: Sonatina Mozart: Divertimento Vivaldi: Concerto)and sets of variations (Beethoven Tartini) there are many shorter pieces as well not only the famous minuets by Boccherini Mozart and Beethoven but also works published for the first time here. The present volume contains a selection of very easy recital pieces for Violoncello and Piano which can be played in the first position after 1-2 years of Cello lessons. The selected pieces are original works from the Renaissance period to the present day: from the Baroque minuet the classical sonatina or the Romantic character piece to contemporary music and tango blues or pop. The pieces are suitable for individual group and chamber music lessons for practising on one's own and especially for the first auditions concerts or competitions. The accompanying CD contains a full version of each piece as well as the piano accompaniment for playing along. The recordingsare intended for orientation and for making it easier to learn to play the pieces – for what is already going around in one's head will also be 'in the fingers' much faster. Arranged from the original version for Mandolin and Piano-For Countess Josephine of Clary-Aldringen Beethoven wrote several works for mandolin and piano four of which are still extant. These new arrangements adhere as closely to the original as possible and are written in the original key. The elegant works are shining little gems. Sonatina in C major radiates a virtuoso ease and cheerfulness while the variations of the Andante are full of humour with deep emotions in the minor variation.
