As far as we know Vivaldi wrote twenty trio sonatas. Several of these works are actually for two parts, as the continuo merely doubles one of the two solo instruments. In the titles of four of these trio sonatas ('Suonata da camera, a 2 violini anco senza basso se piace', meaning if desired the sonata can be played without the bass part) Vivaldi himself gave his approval to the omission of the third instrument. In the light of this, the present publication gives the four works in the form of violin duos.We recommend these three-movement sonatas, in a fast-slow-fast format, for violinists who are already advanced in their studies. 1. Angelo Maria Fiore (c. 1660-1723), composer and virtuoso cellist, was the founder of the Piedmont school. In 1697 he was invited to the Accademia Filarmonica di Bologna as a rare cello player. During his lifetime his work entitled Trattenimenti di camera a due stromenti, violino e cimbalo o violino e violoncello was published by Bartolomeo Gregori in 1698, barely three years after the first cello sonatas to appear in print, the works of Giuseppe Jacchini. Three of the 14 Trattenimenti were written for cello and basso continuo, and they form the contents of this volume. This edition is faithful to the text of the source and the archaic style of writing has been modernized to makethe score (intended for practical, pedagogical purposes) easier to read.

This Sonata in A major belonging to the ‘London’ group was published by John Walsh in January 1704 as the opening work in a series of violin sonatas by different composers delivered to subscribers in twelve monthly instalments. It is also preserved in the manuscript in the British library containing seven violin sonatas by Bitti. It is an extrovert work well suited to public performance — we know that the Cremonese violinist Gasparo Visconti played it at Drury Lane Theatre. The structure follows a pattern that recalls a sonata da camera by Corelli: a prelude like movement followed in turn by a corrente, a slow, triple time movement resembling a sarabanda, and a giga. .

Giovanni Maria Bononcini (1642-1678) published in Bologna in the last year of his life, i. e. in 1678 a collection of 24 movements for two violins and basso continuo entitled Arie e Correnti a tre (Op. 12). In agreement with the sonata da camera traditions of the early Baroque the collection is a series of 9 two-movement and 2 three-movement sonatas. It was published again in London in 1701 with the title Ayres in 3 parts. Four years later a revised edition of the work appeared, also in London, which bore the title Bononcini's Aires for two Flutes and a Bass. The edition published in Amsterdam without date, but presumably around 1725, with the title Preludes, Allemandes, Sarabandes, Courantes, Gavottes et Gigues a 2 Flutes ou Violons et une Basse, is essentially a reprint of the London edition. The present edition contains this posthumous revised variant. Territorial restrictions may apply. Please ask before ordering.
