In 2014, I enjoyed a wonderful residence at the Ucross Foundation in Clearmont,
Wyoming. Ucross is an artist colony that gives writers, composers, and visual artists the
gift of time, space, and support to follow their artistic pursuits; we are provided with
studio space, housing, and meals so that we can work continuously on our projects. I have
been in residence at numerous artist colonies; however, nothing in my previous
experiences prepared me for living in such isolated, wild country. Ucross is situated on a
20,000-acre cattle ranch at nearly 4,000 feet in elevation with fewer than 150 people
living within the town. But what Clearmont lacks in population, it makes up for
abundantly and spectacularly in wilderness and wildlife. I composed the sextet Postcards
from Wyoming to offer three glimpses of what I found to be the most striking aspects of
my residence. The Solitude of Stars, the third and final movement of the original sextet,
was inspired by the stunning nightly display of the heavens above. Without city lights
dimming the night sky, countless stars shone brightly over the vast expanse of the prairie.
This edition is part of The Solitude of Stars Project that I undertook during the 2020
COVID-19 pandemic, which consists of a series of arrangements that I made for
colleagues and friends.

An intense and emotional piece from popular composer Sean O'Loughlin. Lush harmonies with well-placed dissonances pull at your emotions and set the tone for the sophisticated ballad. It is a wonderful vehicle for young musicians to expressive themselves and use their budding musical skills.
Solitude is a dramatic composition for the developing string orchestra. The music is reminiscent of the great folk song settings of Holst, Grainger and others. Keep the music soft in the beginning to allow for growth later on in the piece.The main melody at m. 5 should be played with reverence and nobility. The quarternote rests in the accompanying instruments allow for some breath and drama in the phrase. The use of these quarter-note rests expands a bit at m. 15.The introductory material returns at m. 23 provides a build-up to m. 33. This is a foreshadowing of the larger build-up to the climactic chord at m. 47. The ending is a mere echo of the beginning and brings the music full circle for a solemn, peaceful ending.

Full score. “Songs of Solitude and Night” is in two movements. The first movement has text from Völuspá from the Old Edda, and is called “Prelude”. The text is about creation of the earth, the stars, the sun, the moon and thefirst people on earth, Ask and Embla. The second movement is a poem by the faroese author William Heinesen translated into english by the faroese author Gunnar Hoydal and is called “Hogboy”. The poem begins like this: “Hogboy, thespectre with the cheery name, lives in the mound Mae s Hove in the Orkney island of Pomona. Here you can hear him singing bewildered songs in the dark. Playful Pomona girls are dancing in the moonlight around the old grave”.
