It seems likely that the composition of this work was connected with a penitential service held in the Marienkirche in Muhlhausen to commemorate the disastrous fire which had destroyed large parts of the town on the 29th May 1707, but it has not been possible to discover documentary evidence to prove the correctness of this supposition. Monteverdi's Vespers of 1610 is a work which has both fascinated and perplexed musicologists and performers for many years. It forms by far the larger part of the composer's first significant publication of sacred music, entitled: Of the most blessed virgin a Mass for six voices for church choirs, and Vespers for more voices with several sacred concertos suitable for princely chapels or apartments. By the time this publication appeared, Monteverdi had been in the service of the Gonzaga court at MantUrauffuhrung for at least 18 years, and he was seeking a change of employment, so that the dedication of the volume to the reigning pope, Paul V, may be interpreted as a form of self-advertisement. Originally issued as an Urtext study score, the edition is based closely on the extant printed source, the set of partbooks published at Venice in 1610, and retains the original note values, key and mensuration signatures.

Bach's cantata for solo soprano Mein Herze schwimmt im Blut was written during the summer of 1714 for the Weimar Court service on the 11th Sunday after Trinity. The cantata text by the Darmstadt Court poet Georg Christian Lehms (1684-1717), based on the well-known parable of the Pharisee and the publican, takes on extraordinary potency and intensity of expression in Bach's setting. Bach performed this cantata several times, in Weimar, and also during his years at Cothen aud Leipzig, meanwhile making various alterations. Our publication is based principally on the Leipzig version of 1723, whose instrumentation includes, in addition to the solo oboe and the customary strings and continuo, a violoncello piccolo. The appendix to our edition presents variants for certain movements from Bach's earlier performances, including a Cothen version with obbligato viola da gamba which is particularly interesting for present-day practice. The Missa pastoralis bohemica (Bohemian Shepherds' Mass), composed in 1796 by Mozart's contemporary Jakub Jan Ryba, is the most significant of the so-called Czech Christmas Masses. These are masses in a folkloristic style, in which the individual movements consist of a series of vocal-instrumental scenes in the Czech language; their topic is the birth of Christ and they are performed during the Christmas service. The story is about four Czech shepherds to whom the birth of Christ is announced, whereupon they visit the child in the manger. Ryba's mass became so famous that it is regarded - even today - as a symbol of Czech Christmas. The present critical edition represents the first edition of the work in its original form and the original keys; it contains a singable alternate text in German. This cantata was first performed in Leipzig on New Year's Day 1726. It belongs to a small group of compositions which were composed between Advent 1725 and mid-January 1726 and whose text were written by the same author. There is no reference to the New Year in connection with the circumcision and naming of Jesus in this afternoon worship service. Rather the thoughts in this work are concerned with the praise of God and thanks for his good deeds. Score available separately - see item CA.3101600.

Bach's chorale cantata with its opening text Wohl dem, der sich auf seinen Gott recht kindlich kann verlassen (Tis well with him who on the Lord trusts just like a child) BWV 139 was performed for the first time on 12 November 1724 in the main Leipzig church service. The cantata text, based on the hymn of the same name by Johann Christoph Rube (1665-1746), is in praise of trust in God. In the opening chorus, full of depth of feeling, the hymn melody is heard throughout; this is followed by a lively tenor aria Gott ist mein Freund (God is my friend) with a musical depiction of the adversary raging in vain, and in the bass aria Das Ungluck schlagt auf allen Seiten (Misfortune assails me on every side) Bach presents both drama and Baroque imagery. One of the two solo violin parts for the tenor aria is lost, so our edition offers a reconstruction. The virtuoso violin part of the bass aria was evidently based on a part for violoncello piccolo, now lost. The edition provides for performance by violin or violoncello. Score available separately - see item CA.3113900.
