Full Score-The Horn Concerto was written in 1971 and was the first of the ten concertos Gregson has composed to date. It is dedicated to the English horn player Ifor James who died in 2004 and was originally written for brass band. However in 2013 Gregson was asked by Paul Klein Principal Horn of the Ulster Orchestra and BBC Northern Ireland to undertake an orchestral version for him.  Gregson decided to score the concerto for a late Haydn sized orchestra with the addition of a percussionist to add some colour to the texture. The concerto takes as its starting point the Mozartian model namely a sonata form opening movement a song-like slow movement and a jaunty rondo finale. The opening movement opens with a strident motif built on rising fourths announced by the soloist and answered by the orchestra. This pattern of ‘question/answer’ continues until a climactic moment breaks the tension and is followed by a lyrical second subject announced by the soloist over undulating rhythmic patterns on strings. The music is developed and recapitulated from these ideas with the lyrical idea returning via solo clarinet with horn answering in canon. The movement ends with the strident fourths this time in inversion. The slow movement is in tertiary form and opens with an expansive melody from the soloist over a repetitive harmonic and melodic pattern. This is expanded and developed building all the while in intensity until it is interrupted by cadenza-like passages on the horn and muted brass. After a brief climax the music subsides into a moment of emotional serenity before the opening melody returns this time on solo oboe with the horn interweaving its own answering melodic lines. The rondo finale is more light-hearted in mood with a catchy 6/8 tune at its heart. It is twice interrupted first by an idea built on long held chromatic notes from the soloist against a highly rhythmic backdrop (wind brass and snare drum) then by a slower more thoughtful melodic idea. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's horn concertos: the Mozart expert Henrik Wiese edits the central work genre of Viennese classicism according to the current status of international Mozart research. Mozart wrote the Horn Concerto K. 417 - like the other works of this genre as well - for his horn-playing friend Joseph Leutgeb. The jokes which the composer made at Leutgeb's expense are wellknown. For example, he called the dedicatee a 'donkey” in the autograph, and, as Henrik Wiese evidences in his preface, Mozart also occasionally enjoyed a bit of tomfoolery with the soloist in the musical text as well. Otherwise the editor's task was anything but amusing. The main source - the autograph score - is incomplete: missing are the close of Movement I as well as the entire slow middle movement. For these two sections, Wiese used a copy of the score from the archive of the publisher Johann André. The unusual circumstance that Mozart generally left the horn part almost unmarked recurs in the Concerto K. 417 and was deliberately maintained in the Urtext edition./ Répertoire / Violon 1 (Partie Séparée)

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Horn Concerto No. 1 in D major KV412/514 was written in 1791. The work is in two movements: I. Allegro II. Rondo. Although numbered first this wasactually the last of the composer’s four horn concerti to be completed. Compared to the other three concertos it is shorter in duration (two movements rather than three) and is much simpler in regard to both range andtechnique.This publication has been edited by John Alley and Timothy Jones for Grade 7-8 Horn in F.

“I first learned of the ‘Horn Trio’ by Johannes Brahms while still a student at Dartington College of Arts and it had a profound effect on me when I heard it performed by Alan Civil Hugh Bean and David Parkhouse at a concert in Plymouth in 1967. As a novice Horn player and composer I dreamt of being able to join Lennox Berkeley and the many other composers inspired by these luscious musical sonorities andthis work of great genius by Brahms. Now in my late sixties I feel ready to tackle this project and I am delighted that the piece has now been published. The writing is I hope idiomatic and accessible giving the performer ampleopportunity for generous and expressive playing within a proudly English musical landscape. KV 175 KV 382-Scored for Flute 2 Oboes 2 Horns 2 Trumpets Timpani and Strings. Composed in 1773 this was the 17 year old Mozart's first original Piano concerto - earlier efforts had been based on other composers' works.
