The Lieder Anthology. 65 Songs by 13 Composers. This edition presents 65 diverse songs by major composers of German art song, or lieder, and is the perfect one-volume lieder source for voice students. All the songs are new Vocal Library editions. Historical notes about the relevant history and background of each song are included, as are line-by-line translations for study. A select committee of experienced voice teachers was consulted to choose the most essential and vocally instructive songs in compiling this collection. Composers represented: Beethoven, Brahms, Franz, Gustav Mahler, Alma Mahler, Fanny Hensel, Mendelssohn, Mozart, Schubert, Clara Schumann, Robert Schumann, Strauss, Wolf. Robert Schumann once described his lieder as a ”mirror image of his self”. This applies particularly to his compositions from Heinrich Heine’s “Buch der Lieder”. What began as a lyrical intermezzo then developed into “Dichterliebe” a work with which Schumann identified the ardour of his love for Clara Wieck. This work still presents an enigma to performers; how Schumann interpretes Heine’s irony in his music is often discussed. But one thing is certain: with “Dichterliebe” the composer created what is perhaps the best-loved and one of the most tightly-woven lieder cycles of the Romanticperiod. This new edition presents the work based on the first edition. It takes Schumann’s autograph score into consideration an autograph score where there have recently been discussions as to whether it should be presented as an independent alternative version. The four lieder omitted by Schumann from the printed edition are included in the appendix. At long last singers with a lower vocal range can also rely on Henle???s Urtext editions of Schumann: the wonderful Song Cycle op. 24 on poems by Heine now appears in a transposed version edited by Schumann expert Kazuko Ozawa. With the support of celebrated Lieder accompanist Gerold Huber Henle now offers altos carefully arranged transpositions for medium voice. This Urtext edition includes an extensive preface on the origin of the work and a detailed Critical Report on the edition. The original edition for high voice is available in HN 548.

After a long time spent writing only for piano Schumann produced a true outburst of lieder inspired by the poetry of Heinrich Heine: ?What a blessing it is to write for the voice!? Schumann wrote to his beloved Clara. It is as though a knot was untied while he was writing the Heine-Liederkreis Op.24. Retrospectively Schumann wrote that this new poetic spirit had inspired the composition of lieder to such an extent that it had become the only genre to make significant progress since the time of Beethoven.Indeed these nine songs which represent the only complete setting of the underlying Heine cycle came so close to the spirit of the poet that a new epoch of liedcomposition was founded.
