Thus Spoke the Raven was inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's dark and mysterious poem The Raven. Sounding particularly sophisticated for this grade level, the piece accurately depicts Poe's poem in a fun and exciting musical setting. Slightly sinister sounding percussion begins the medium-tempo introduction, which leads into an energetic and driving Allegro. With the use of pulsing staccato accompaniments, exhilarating ostinato patterns, and stimulating syncopation, this piece has it all!

Commissioned to write a piece for the 50th anniversary of the United Nations, Davies provided a musical General Assembly of his own: a bright overture based on an Australian aboriginal song which gives rise to 'national anthems' of various kinds and instrumental colourings. Finally the 'anthems' are combined, 'if not triumphantly', Davies says, 'at least in a manner whereby they get along together'. The first performance took place in June 1995 in Nottingham. It was given by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Peter Maxwell Davies. Score (miniature). Duration c. 14mins.

From a song shared by Squamish First Nation artist and performer Bob Baker, comes this distinctive work for concert band shaped by Robert Buckley that will allow your students to experience the music of one of North America's First Peoples. Raven flows from a playful pentatonic melody and uses falloffs to imitate the original vocal style of the Eagle Song Dancers.

This contemporary work based on Edgar Allan Poe's The Raven tells the eerie story of a man confronted by a raven, and his slow descent into utter madness. A haunting piano line supports the opening melody in alto saxophone, surrounded by contemporary effects and textures. As the man becomes more irritated, the music picks up in tempo and becomes increasingly dissonant and violent until it errupts in a cacophony of chaos. Finally, the man breaks, and the unsettling sounds of the opening piano return. Absolutely stunning.

The text for Dust came to me in a season of reflection. As educators and mentors to the generations that come after us, we have a responsibility to provide tools so that others can shape their future. Overtime, it can become easy to lose one's personal vision for one's self when influenced by so many outside factors. When the pressure builds, it can almost feel like a self-reckoning; an opportunity to build ourselves again. Though we are influenced by our surroundings, we are all unique in our purpose and design! These questions of self-reflection came first:How much of me flows from their blood? How much of me is built of their flesh? How much of me is manifested from their dreams? And just like our own identities, the rest of the poem begin to take shape. I hope that this text speaks to you wherever you are in your discovery and journey to your most authentic self.DustI am rubbleCarved into my ruins, you will find my ancestry interwoven with my identityHow much of me flows from their blood? How much of me is built of their flesh? How much of me is manifested from their dreams? The only way to my truth is through my foundationI rage against those who would dare covet this sacred spaceI am the temple and the monumentThis is holy ground.I must demolish myself.Tear down the walls that have held up your visions and destroyed mine.I must restore myself in my own image. And when the dust settles, you can see my bones.Pillars of strength, marble, and earthWalls painted with my blood, cracked with time, polished like my skin(Golden)I will not be complete, but I will be homethe dust settlesAnd we build again—Coty Raven Morris      .

The Wings Of Night for Trombone and String Quartet was composed by Bent Sorensen in 1998, as a commission from the Warsaw Autumn for Christian Lindberg and the Silesian String Quartet. Programme note: I do not yet know what to write about this short piece which I have just finished. But like my Piano Concerto LA NOTTE, it seems to take place at night-time - or perhaps it is only because I wrote the piece by night. In short, the title is from Shakespeare's 'Romeo and Juliet'.Juliet sings to the night - the night of love: 'Come, night, come Romeo, come, thou day in night, For thou wilt lie upon the wings of night, Whither than new snow upon a raven's back.THE WINGS OFNIGHT was composed as a commission from the Warsaw Autumn for Christian Lindberg and the Silesian String Quartet.
