Yrjö Kilpinen (1892-1959) is most known for his hundreds of lieds and song cycles. His instrumental compositions have been less know, ie. the six piano sonatas and suite for gamba and piano. Large-scale Sonata for violin and piano is dated in 1935 with opus number 87. The work was never finished, and National Library in Helsinki holds several sketches and versions in its Kilpinen collection.

In 2015 violinist Frida Backman commissioned a completion of the Sonata from composer Walter Wolff. Wolff worked on the sketches and versions until 2018, when the work was completed and the Sonata premiered.

The present publication is the first publication of the Sonata. It sheds light to Kilpinen as an instrumental composer.

Yrjö Kilpinen (1892-1959) tunnetaan lähinnä lied-sävellyksistään, joita aktiivisina sävellysvuosina syntyikin satoja. Vähemmälle huomiolle ovat jääneet hänen instrumentaalisävellyksensä, mm. kuusi pianosonaattia, sellosonaatti, sarja gamballe ja pianolle sekä muutamat pikkukappaleet.

Vuodelle 1935 päivätty neliosainen, laajamuotoinen sonaatti viululle ja pianolle (op. 87) jäi keskeneräiseksi. Suomen Kansalliskirjaston Kilpinen-kokoelmassa oli useita luonnoksia ja eri versioita. Sonaatin osista neljäs oli keskeneräisin.

Viulutaiteilija Frida Backman tilasi konserttiaan varten sonaatin täydennöksen säveltäjä Walter Wolffilta. Hän sai työnsä päätöksen 2018, jonka jälkeen sonaatti kantaesitettiin.

Fennica Gehrmanin julkaisu on sonaatin ensipainos, ja siten laajentaa kuvaamme Yrjö Kilpisestä instrumenttiteosten säveltäjänä.

The study of Johann Sebastian Bach’s compositions on the harp has a long history. The first who understood its importance for educational purposes was Robert Nicolas Charles Bochsa, who inserted some fugues of Bach and Haendel in his monumental method for the harp op. 60, accompanied by detailed fingerings. However, it was from the beginning of the 20th Century that the great harp teachers began to work extensively on Bach’s repertoire. Among the most illustrious examples we can mention Henriette Renié, who published two volumes of transcriptions, one containing ten preludes and one ten short pieces, Alfred Kastner who worked on the Two–part Inventions, Marcel Grandjany with his famous studies based on partitas and sonatas for solo violin, or Annie Louis David, who published two important volumes of preludes and fugues taken from The Well-Tempered Clavier, not to mention all those who transcribed just a single piece for concert purpose.
As is known, the Notebook for Anna Magdalena (Notenbüchlein für Anna Magdalena Bach), consists of two small manuscript volumes, the first compiled in Köthen in 1722 and the second in Leipzig three years later. The first contains only compositions by Johann Sebastian, while the second also includes pieces by other authors such as Couperin, Hasse and Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach.
The idea of ​​collecting in a volume some of the simplest compositions contained in the Notebook was born mainly from the desire to introduce even the youngest students to Bach’s music, in an easy and progressive way, so as to start as soon as possible at make them familiar with polyphonic writing and the use of embellishments, introduced here in a simplified version.

The present edition of the trio sonatas by Johann Ludwig Krebs (1713-1780) is based on pp. 113-158 of a contemporary copy of the trio sonata collection which is held in the Sachsische Landesbibliothek, Dresden, shelf-mark Mus. 1-Q-1. The common title at the beginning of the first trio reads: Sechs Trio a 2 Flauti e Basso. In spite of the consistent indication of instrument in the source the music material of the second flute part suggests an alternative use of instruments. Apart from the characteristic string turns occurring in some places mention should be made of the range of voice up to g of the first trio sonata if the/in first place and particulary of the consistently applied double stops of the second melodic instrument in the first movement of piece No. 6. Angelo Maria Fiore (c. 1660-1723), composer and virtuoso cellist, was the founder of the Piedmont school. In 1697 he was invited to the Accademia Filarmonica di Bologna as a rare cello player. During his lifetime his work entitled Trattenimenti di camera a due stromenti, violino e cimbalo o violino e violoncello was published by Bartolomeo Gregori in 1698, barely three years after the first cello sonatas to appear in print, the works of Giuseppe Jacchini. Three of the 14 Trattenimenti were written for cello and basso continuo, and they form the contents of this volume. This edition is faithful to the text of the source and the archaic style of writing has been modernized to makethe score (intended for practical, pedagogical purposes) easier to read.

Der Komponist und virtuose Cellist Angelo Maria Fiore (c1660-1723) war der Gründer der Piemont-Schule. 1697 wurde er in der ‚Accademia Filarmonica di Bologna als raro suonatore di violoncello' aufgenommen. Schon zu Lebzeiten erschien sein Werk: ‚Trattenimenti di camera a due stromenti, violino e cimbalo o violino e violoncello, kaum drei Jahre nach den ersten gedruckten Cellosonaten von Giuseppe Jacchini, der Herausgeber war Bartolomeo Gregori. Von der vierzehn ‚Trattenimenti' (eigentliche Barocksonaten) entstanden drei für Cello und Basso continuo, diese Werke beinhaltet unser Band. Die Ausgabe bleibt zum Text der Quelle treu, um die Lesbarkeit der praxisorientierten, vorallem pädagogischer Zwecke dienenden Noten zu vereinfachen, wurde die alte Schreibweise modernisiert.
