As the prophets had long promised, the time had finally come for the advent of Jesus, the Son of God. But could this child, born in such humble surroundings, truly be the promised Savior and King? Where were the trumpets and fanfare announcing the Mighty One who would vanquish the enemy and deliver God's people? Could the prophecy be fulfilled with the promise of love and everlasting peace? No armies? No generals? No golden carriage? From the apparent dichotomy presented by that night in Bethlehem comes the premise for this thoughtful, inspired and tuneful seasonal work from the talented pen of John Purifoy. With the artfully-crafted weaving of a newly-composed Christmas benediction with Silent Night, a tender optional ending for a candlelight service and/or Christmas Eve is offered. Also available is a joyous reprise of the opening chorus for services in which an exciting and jubilant finale is desired.

Prophecy becomes song in this contemporary anthem based on passages from the book of Isaiah. Toggling between a singer-songwriter style and more traditional choral vernacular, this piece is ideal for the traditional/transitional church. The text is a vision of a better world filled with life, peace, and hope. The use of interesting harmonic twists throughout the song produces a refreshing timbre to the sonic landscape. Something wonderfully different for Advent!

The magnificent interweaving of harmonies and dialogue-like Voices in Handel s For Unto Us A Child Is Born make it a perfect addition to the festive choral repertoire. German-born, British Baroque composer George Frideric Handel originally composed this piece in 1741, for the English-language oratorio Messiah, which eventually became one of the best-known and most frequently performed choral works in Western music. As the last song of Scene 3 of Part I of the oratorio, which addresses Isaiah's specific prophecy about the virgin birth of a Messiah, For Unto Us A Child Is Born tells the news of Christmas, the birth of a son, in Isaiah s words as found in the Scripture (Isaiah 9:6). The delicate, familiar theme is introduced by the Sopranos and taken up by their counter-voices, the Tenors, later the same dialog is given over to the Altos and Basses. The tutti culminates in Wonderful, Counselor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father and The Prince of Peace.

Love is Born! draws a correlation between the Old Testament prophecies of anticipating and preparing for the promised Messiah and the New Testament fulfillment of those prophecies that still found the people of God amazed and surprised when Emmanuel did arrive. The fact that He arrived in such an unexpected manner merely enhances the mystery and wonder of Christ’s birth. The cantata presents the four traditional themes of Advent to tell the Christmas story: Hope, Peace, Joy, and Love. The work can be presented in different segments during Advent and Christmas, or as an entire cantata with narration. From the brisk, exciting instrumental prelude to the powerful conclusion, here is a work that is as beautiful as it is unforgettable. 35 minutes.
