Prophecy becomes song in this contemporary anthem based on passages from the book of Isaiah. Toggling between a singer-songwriter style and more traditional choral vernacular, this piece is ideal for the traditional/transitional church. The text is a vision of a better world filled with life, peace, and hope. The use of interesting harmonic twists throughout the song produces a refreshing timbre to the sonic landscape. Something wonderfully different for Advent!

Ancient Desert Drone was composed for orchestra in 1940 at the request of Percy Grainger, who encouraged the idea of using a single pitch “drone” throughout the work (similar to Grainger's own The Immovable Do) and to whom the piece is dedicated. While the work suggests an Eastern charm with its distinctive mode and primitive rhythms, Cowell himself stated there was no particular programmatic intent. This transcription for band is an exotic and welcome addition to the repertoire for winds. Duration: 5:00Recorded by the Trinity University Symphonic Wind Ensemble – James Worman, conductor

The title The Deserted Churchyards refers to several churchyards along the western coast of Northern Jutland, which long ago were safely inland, but which now are being eaten up by the threatening sea. Though The Deserted Churchyards is an independent work, it can also be played as a Prelude to Funeral Procession. The Deserted Churchyards was commissioned by Lerchenborg Music Days and is dedicated to Louise Lerche-Lerchenborg.

Depicting life in the desert, this captivating work begins with the haunting sounds of a baron desert as relentless heat hits it by day. At night, exotic plants and animals spring to life, portrayed with rhythmic vitality and bold musical statements. The work ends as softly as it began, with the relentless sun once again beating down on the parched desert. Intense and captivating!

Imagine an oasis in the desert. Far in the distance a caravan is sighted. The air is filled with excitement and anticipation, the quiet desert becoming louder and more animated as the large caravan approaches and passes. This scene is musically depicted in Larry Neeck’s Desert Caravan, which provides numerous opportunities for your band to work with melody, dynamics, and drama. Transport your audience to a faraway place, as the sounds of the camels and their herdsman slowly die away, and the caravan fades into the distance. A delightful musical journey!

Henderson is a city in Clark County, Nevada, just southeast of Las Vegas and surrounded by desert: this was the inspiration for the title. Desert Dances opens with a lively introduction, mostly in 3/4, which pervades the faster sections of the piece. This subsides to introduce a slower dance which expands to a full-band climax. The introduction soon returns and leads to the main theme of the piece, a waltz-like melody played by the full ensemble. A short bridge passage follows, which leads to a legato central theme. This is played twice and heralds the return of the main theme and a short coda which closes the work. An imaginative work for concert or contest with nice features throughout all groups of the band.

Maslanka's wind ensemble writing is highly prized among college and university bands. One young fan asked if Maslanka had ever written a clarinet concerto. No one has asked, said he. I'm asking, said she, and Desert Roads for clarinet and wind ensemble was underway. Since its premiere in 2005 (Margaret Dees, clarinet, and Dallas Wind Symphony), Desert Roads has been programmed by many major university wind ensembles, and has been recorded by the Illinois State University Wind Ensemble (Stephen Steele, cond.). A thorough discussion of the work became a doctoral thesis by Joshua Mietz. We now present the work in piano reduction.

After traveling out west in America, composer Tyler Arcari was intrigued by the rugged life of the deserts and canyons. When you stand still, the wind across the flat earth sings an eerie tune. This new soundscape is the composer’s attempt to put this idea into sound!

This is that special piece for your special choir: a tonal, a cappella, double chorus tour de force of minimalist techniques that sounds like...the desert! This piece repays careful study: the conductor who helps the singers identify repeated patterns, and the relation of each part to its counterpart in the other chorus, will accelerate the learning process. Your reward is four sections of differing programmatic effects, to be performed as one long movement. 1. Pyramid Lake (SSAA/SSAA a cappella; duration: 1’30; range: g-e; difficulty: medium-difficult). 2. Death Valley (SSAA/SSAA a cappella; duration: 1’50; range: b flat - f; difficulty: medium-difficult). 3. Bryce Canyon (SSAA/SSAA a cappella; duration: 2’40; range: a-d; difficulty: medium-difficult). 4. Devil’s Playground (SSAA/SSAA a cappella; duration: 2’20; range: f-a; difficulty: medium-difficult). The southwestern U.S. state of Arizona has more than its fair share of stunning landscapes, natural phenomena and national monuments. It has, not surprisingly, been featured as the backdrop to many film Westerns. Best known is the Grand Canyon, but there are also numerous deserts, a petrified forest, extinct volcanoes and the huge Sunset Crater.

Written for the late Robert Shaw and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in 1983, Desert Forests is one of the most successful of Brant's spatial works for conventional-sized symphony orchestra. The score mandates that the higher woodwinds (piccolos, flutes, oboes, clarinets) be stationed in a balcony at the back of the hall and the trumpets and trombones in boxes or balconies on opposite sides of the hall. There is also an optional improvised piano-obbligato. A recommended seating diagram for the stage instruments (also unusually arranged) is included in the score and was used to great effect in the performances conducted by Kurt Masur with the New York Philharmonic in May 1994. This extraordinary work expands the idea of bitonality and spatiality as a structural device to create a fifteen minute exercise in ecstatic polyphony, inspired, according to the composer by a visit to a forest of saguro cactus in Saguro National Monument, near Tucson, Arizona. Complete performance materials are available on rental.
