Ottorino Respighi est le plus connu des compositeurs italiens du XXe siècle. Il doit sa notoriété à son triptyque les Fontaines de Rome les Pins de Rome et les Fêtes Romaines. Fasciné par la musique ancienne il s inspire d un recueil d œuvres pour luth des XVIe et XVIIe siècles pour composer les trois suites de Danses et Airs antiques. Chaque suite est constituée de quatre parties. Franco Cesarini a réalisé une transcription élégante et brillante de la première des trois suites composées à l origine pour Orchestre de Chambre.
