Traditional foundations in new tonal splendour - the leading representative of new Italian instrumental music Ottorino Respighi transcribed the original lute versions for large orchestra in a masterly fashion.Thanks to his compositional analysis of tradition Respighi made a substantial contribution to the revival and rediscovery of forgotten musical treasures. The three orchestral suites based on lute settings from the Italian Renaissance and Italian Early Baroque period however have not only been influenced by the historicism of later revivals of original texts. Respighi makes the intimate original pieces also shine in repackaged versions for large orchestra thusachieving wonderful brilliant sound effects!

Ottorino Respighi est le plus connu des compositeurs italiens du XXe siècle. Il doit sa notoriété à son triptyque les Fontaines de Rome les Pins de Rome et les Fêtes Romaines. Fasciné par la musique ancienne il s?inspire d?un recueil d?œuvres pour luth des XVIe et XVIIe siècles pour composer les trois suites de Danses et Airs antiques. Chaque suite est constituée de quatre parties. Franco Cesarini a réalisé une transcription élégante et brillante de la première des trois suites composées à l?origine pour Orchestre de Chambre.

Concerto in the Old Style Concerto in A Minor (18th century style)-Now available for the very first time the reduction for violin and piano of Ottorino Respighi’s Concerto all’antica originally composed for violin and orchestra.Composed in 1908 Respighi’s Concerto all’antica reflects one of the most characteristic artistic aspects of this composer namely his love for ancient music. This can also be seen in those of his works that adopt the toccata and concertoforms (Toccata for piano and orchestra Concerto a cinque) as well as his use of the late Renaissance/Baroque style for the three suites in his Antiche danze ed arie per liuto or in his Uccelli. We find it again in hisSuites per istrumenti ad arco (1902) and his Concerto all’antica for violin (1908) here provided.
