Not many people know that Franz Liszt arranged some of his piano pieces for the cello, with piano accompaniment, and that these versions of the works appeared in print during the maestro's lifetime. Ãrpád Pejtsik selected two of these for this volume compiled to mark Liszt's jubilee: Elegies I and II. The other compositions by Liszt that appear in the collection were likewise originally works for piano: the Ave Maria and Cantique d'amour (pieces from the Harmonies poétiques et religieuses cycle) were transcribed by a pupil of Liszt, Robert Pflughaupt the cello version, transposed into G major, of the E Major Consolation is by Jules de Swert, solo cellist in the Weimar orchestraof those days that of the Angelus (the opening piece in Volume 3 of the cycle entitled Years of Pilgrimage ) is by Lothar Windsperger, a German composer who lived at the turn of the 19th-20th century. The Valse oubliée No. 1 was transcribed by Liszt s virtuoso piano pupil Ferruccio Busoni Notturno, which became famous as the third piece in the Liebesträume series, is a transposed version of the original song ( O lieb, so lang du lieben kannst ) made by the editor of this volume. Not many people know that Ferenc Liszt arranged some of his piano pieces for the cello, with piano accompaniment, and this version of the works appeared in print during the maestro's lifetime. Ãrpád Pejtsik selected two of these forthis volume compiled to mark Liszt's jubilee: Elegy I and Elegy II. The other compositions by Liszt that appear in the collection were likewise originally works for piano: the Ave Maria and Cantique d'amour(pieces from the Harmonies poétiques et religieuses cycle) were transcribed by a pupil of Liszt, Robert Pflughaupt; the cello version, transposed into G major, of the E major Consolation is by Jules de Swert, solo cellistin the Weimar orchestra of those days; that of the Angelus (the opening piece in Volume 3 of the cycle entitled Years of Pilgrimage) is by Lothar Windsperger, a German composer who lived at the turn of the 19th-20thcentury.

The Norwegian composer Antonio Bibalo was born in 1922 and is originally from Triste, Italy. Bibalo's encounter with music began with the piano, and his instrumental talents took him on to the Conservatoire in Trieste, where he took his diploma in 1946. During World War II Bibalo, like other Italian men, had been conscripted into Mussolini's army. He escaped, but was captured by the Germans and had to do forced labour as a German prisoner-of-war. He wrote the Sinfonia Notturna in 1968.

The Divertimento Notturno is a three-movement Serenata or Cassazione, a popular genre in Austria during the 18th century and conceived as a musical entertainment. The quartet titled La Caccia (The Hunt), is one of the several string quartets that evoke hunting games, including Haydn Op. 1 No. 1 and Mozart Op. 10 No. 3. The last quartet of the collection, Il Giuocatore (the Gambler), depicts the excitement, despair and redemption after a heavy loss during a game of cards.

This piece was commissioned by the Musica Viva Music Society and its premiere took place on 22 VIII, 2001 during the final concert of the Fifth Lubuska Camerata 2001 International Chamber Music Festival. Since its inception it has enjoyed great popularity and hasfound a place in the repertoire of many violinists, including Kaja Danczowska, Patrycja Piekutowska, Krzysztof Bakowski, Pawel Kuklinski. It comprises three movements played attacca: 1 Lento 2. Allegro 3. Molto lento. The first movement has the nature of a nocturne - Lento - in which the singing, lyrical theme in the violin sound is accompanied by extensive sound planes, forming a slow, static course. In contrast to this, the second part is virtuosic - Allegro in which vibrant movement dominates with sixteenth notes and syncopated rhythms. The shortest of all, the nostalgic third movement, has the character of free improvisation on the violin; in terms of orchestral texture it is a reference to the first part.
