This treatment of the beautiful, medieval metaphor of the Virgin Mother is a welcomed addition to the settings that came before. It is a short, simple 8-measure carol in rolling parallel thirds with an easy keyboard accompaniment—and lots of room for expressive performance.

Antonin Dvorak's impressive Stabat Mater for soloists, chorus and orchestra is probably the best-known of the composer's sacred works. Some painful experiences - in 1875 his first daughter died, and in 1877 he lost two other children in quick succession - may have led to Dvorak's preoccupation with the suffering of the Mother of God, who stands weeping beneath the cross of her son. The music enters into the different moods of the liturgical texts with great sensitivity. Nine movements in slow to moderate tempi serve as a kind of Passion meditation, before the ecstasy of a vision of the resurrection wins the upper hand at the end of the tenth movement. With our newly-published arrangement for chamber orchestra (flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, bassoon, timpani, and strings), smaller choirs now have the opportunity of performing this work without the choir being drowned out by a large-scale symphony orchestra. The symphonic character of the work is nevertheless preserved. This scoring offers an optimal balance between transparency and orchestral sound. All vocal parts (soloists and chorus) are identical with the original version. Vocal score and choral score can be used also together with the original version, which is in preparation.

Franz Schubert's “Stabat Mater†D 175 is one of a number of church works that he wrote for his local congregation in Lichtental. This edition is based on the sole surviving source, the composer’s autograph full score. Unlike its like-named companion piece D 383, Schubert uses the original Latin poem here. In his setting of April 1815 he focuses on the first two lines of the text depicting the Virgin’s motherly sorrows. This edition is based on the Urtext from the “New Schubert Editionâ€. The original figured bass numerals found in Schubert’s score have been modernised in all performance material and meticulously adapted to meet the demands of today’s performers.

Composer's Notes: “In writing this work I wanted to compose something which was both timeless and contemporary, both sacred and secular. The title (Sacred Songs) is therefore slightly misleading as the three poems are concerned with political repression in Latin America and are deliberately coupled with traditional religious texts to emphasise a deeper solidarity with the poor of that sub-continent. It was my interest in Liberation Theology which made me combine the poems of the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo in Argentina with the texts of the Latin mass in Búsqueda (an earlier music-theatre work) and has now led me to attempt a similar synthesis of ideas in Cantos Sagrados. The voices in Ariel Dorfman's poems belong to those who suffer a particular type of political repression: the 'disappearance' of political prisoners. Ana Maria Mendoza's poem about the Virgin of Guadeloupe tackles the same problem by asking a more fundamental cultural and historical question.â€.
