Jacob de Haan begins his arrangement of the well-known hymn Allein Gott in der Höh’ sei Ehr (All Glory Be to God on High) with a quotation from his own Missa Katharina, a mass for choir, soprano, and band. To this melody he sets the Latin text from the last part of the Gloria. The chorale is then heard after an interlude and can, at the director’s discretion, be accompanied by the choir singing in either German or English. A perfect work for church concerts. The Gospel Mass—a mass for mixed choir, combo and concert band—is based on the gospel music that has spread throughout the world since its creation in America. After Missa Brevis and Missa Katharina this is the third mass fromthe pen of Jacob de Haan. The movements of the mass ordinary as we know it have now been composed in various pop styles that have their origin in the gospel music. We hear, then, not only the classic American gospel style (including thecharacteristic clapping and swing rhythms), but also freer gospel styles that have developed over the course of time. The Credo, for example, is a ballad with rock and funk influences. The Agnus Dei is heard as a slow blues—a genreclosely linked to gospel music. The unique feature of this work, of course, is in the combination of all these pop and gospel elements with the Latin liturgy of the Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus, Benedictus and Agnus Dei, which results in abeautiful, cohesive whole. As far as we know, The Gospel Mass is the only true gospel mass. The Gospel Mass-a mass for mixed choir, combo and concert band-is based on the gospel music that has spread throughout the world since its creation in America. The Agnus Dei is heard as a slow blues-a genreclosely linked to gospel music.

Barbara Heller's duet 'Herbstmusik' [Autumnal Music] for cello and piano is a short piece of 5-6 minutes' duration which is as vibrant and colourful as the season itself and a welcome addition to the repertoire for this combination of instruments. Graded at intermediate level, it is also a suitable extension to the contemporary repertoire for advanced young cellists and for playing in youth music competitions (age range 11-16).This piece only requires players to use the first four positions plus harmonics. Fingerings and bowings were added in collaboration with the cellist Katharina Deserno from Cologne. An improvised solo cello cadenza may be added, starting from the Bb with fermata in bar 88. This might draw on the musical material in the preceding bars 85-88, possibly making use of motifs and playing techniques already featured in the piece, such as 'col legno' or 'pizzicato' - but no limits should be placed upon the performer's imagination.

The Complete Vocal Works Johann Pachelbel is known today as a composer of organ music and of a world-famous instrumental canon which frequently features in concert programmes and recording catalogues. However, the same can be said of only a few of his vocal compositions. At most, the motets appear occasionally in church music repertoire. Pachelbel's arias, vocal concerti and large-scale Magnificats have received little attention up to now. Church musicians and musicologists have long wished for a critical edition of these important works, which survive in Pachelbel's manuscript and were largely composed in his main places of work, Erfurt and Nuremberg . As always with such ventures, new discoveries are to be expected regarding the body of works, source material and the context of the works. This concerns not only beautiful music, but rather a deepening of our understanding of Pachelbel as a key figure between southern and central German traditions, and the recognition of an oeuvre which has all too often been pushed into the shadows by the mighty Bach. The Critical Edition The edition aims to make available all of Johann Pachelbel's surviving vocal works in the best possible form. It is edited by the Institut fur Musikwissenschaft at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and the Institut fur Kirchenmusik at the Kunstuniversitat Graz. Two volumes per year are planned. As a chronological order is not possible in many cases, the individual works have been arranged according to scoring within their groups. Fragments and works where Johann Pachelbel's authorship is doubtful appear at the end of the respective group. Each volume includes an introduction (Ger/Eng) and a Critical Commentary (Ger). Format 25.5 x 32.5 cm; cloth-bound.

A lyrical, extremely expressive composition!
