The St. John Passion ranks alongside the St. Matthew Passion, the Christmas Oratorio, the Magnificat and the B minor Mass as one of the great vocal works from Johann Sebastian Bach's Leipzig years. In contrast to his other large-scale choral works, however, Bach never gave this work a definitive final form. Rather, for every performance he substantially revised the general concept of the piece and also changed numerous details. All previous editions of the St. John Passion have combined readings from various layers of sources and thus present the work in a form which was never heard during Bach's lifetime. Consequently, the wish often expressed by conductors to perform an authentic version by Bach could not be easily achieved. The present critical, new edition of the St. John Passion fulfills this wish and for the first time makes available the complete music of the second version of the work as it was performed under Bach's direction in 1725. Since a number of movements were replaced by others, including the opening chorus, this version differs most dramatically from the standard version which is well known today. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3124500.

The St. John Passion, Bach's first passion oratorio, can hardly be understood asonework. Between 1724 and 1750 the work was performed at least four times in various Leipzig churches under the composer's direction and for every one of these occasions it was revised - sometimes quite substantially. This edition presents the St. John Passion in its second version of 1725, of which only excerpts were rendered in the New Bach Edition volume II/4 (1973). This version as well as the last one of 1749 constitute the two versions that have come down to us almost in their entirety. Most recently found sources - in particular the libretto print of the passion rediscovered in 2015 - are taken into consideration in this edition for the first time.

The St. John Passion SWV 481, with its full title History of the Passion and Death of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ According to the Evangelist St. John, is counted among the most frequently performed works of Heinrich Schutz. Other than the later passions by Johann Sebastian Bach, the original scoring does not include instrumental accompaniment. To enable a presentation of the passion by a wider circle of performers, however, the composer and church musician Arnold Mendelssohn (1855-1933) has developed this arrangement with organ or piano accompaniment, being a harmonic framework and new tone color at the same time. The edition also suggests chorales from the Evangelisches Gesangbuch for a possible active participation of the congregation.

In the autumn of 1721, when Georg Philipp Telemann became cantor at the Hamburg Johanneum and music director of the city’s five principal churches, he faced the challenge of composing and performing a new Passion setting every year. The ninety-minute St. John Passion of 1745 was written in a winningly clear and transparent style, with two large choral numbers, six chorales (probably joined by the congregation) and several turbae that pose interesting yet manageable demands on the chorus. The plain and unassuming recitatives and the eleven sharply defined yet contemplative arias give soloists broad leeway for artistic interpretation. This volume follows the Urtext of vol. 29 of the Telemann Edition, thereby offering a reliable text at the pinnacle of modern scholarship.

Unlike Bach’s other oratorio compositions, there is no definitive version of the St. John Passion. The first version of 1724 which is today’s standard version represents a mixture of different readings but it was not performed like this in Bach’s day. On the other hand, the second version of 1725 was performed under the direction of Bach himself and can therefore be considered authentic. In addition to a change in order of several movements, the second version differs from the earlier version by the use of the opening chorus “O Mensch, bewein”.The performance material corresponds to the Urtext edition of Version II which was recently published as part of the “New Bach Edition – Revised” (NBArev).

Welcome comebackBach's St John and St. Matthew Passions are popular and well established in concert life. Of a third, the Markus Passion, only Picander's original libretto is extant. Parallel arias from various cantatas replace the lacking music for arias, and instead of the lost recitative and the turba [crowd] choruses, the spoken gospel text is bilingually published in this edition (in German/English). The freshly-prepared performance material including a detailed commentary is supplemented by a newly-arranged piano reduction.,,Une version qui n'a rien d'authentique, mais qui tient la route. C'est du Bach de bout en bout et, contrairement a d'autres reconstitutions, l'editeur ne propose rien pour les recitatifs. L'evangeliste pourrait meme etre un recitant. Interessante suggestion. Cantata BWV 127 belongs to the cycle of chorale cantatas which Bach performed in 1724/25 in Leipzig. It bears close links to the St John Passion, which was performed on Good Friday 1725 in its second version. In formal terms and in the interpretation of the text and its orchestration, it is one of the most astonishing vocal works by Bach. The opening chorus, with its multi-layered construction, is nothing less than a preliminary version for the chorale fantasia O Mensch bewein dein Sunde gross. The aria Die Seele ruht in Jesu Handen is distinguished by its exquisite scoring: a solo oboe and the soprano form a duet, whilst the background comprises delicate chords on recorders and continuo, intended to symbolize funeral bells. A solo trumpet gives the following movement particular brilliance. The words Ich breche mit starker und helfender Hand unmistakably anticipate the chorus Sind Blitze, sind Donner in Wolken verschwunden from the St Matthew Passion. New revised edition. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3112700.
