Between 1717 and 1723 Johann Sebastian Bach composed Six Suites for Violoncello (BWV 1007 ??? BWV 1012). Of these the first three have been transcribed for Guitar in this coursebook. The first of these is always a prelude followed by five dances. BWV997-The purpose of the series if Bach was a cellist is to live the fantasy that everything Bach wrote he wrote for the cello. It may also serve as a way for cellists to get close to Bach through works other than the six solo suites and the three gamba sonatas.I first came across the Partita by Johann Sebastian Bach in a version for flute and strings beautifully recorded by Kurt Redel. Since my early teens it has been on my list of special pieces.The four movements show extraordinary variation. In the hands of Bach the key of C minor becomes particularly powerful of limitless weight sometimes even stern. Is there an opening of a movement from the baroqueera which compares with power of the first movement here? It is a magni-ficent example of musical temperament.Three 18th century manuscripts survive. One found among the papers of C.Ph.E.Bach and two by Johann Philipp Kirnberger a student of J.S.Bach. All three are in the form of a keyboard sonata. Because of the choice of register however one may ask whether they are in turn arrangements of an original composition for solo flute or solo violin. The Double is very pianistic and may therefore have been added later. For all movements except the Fugue I have supplied a piano part for the right hand.

J. S. Bach's French Overture In B Minor BWV 831 was published along with the Italian Concerto as the second half of the Clavier-Übung II in 1735. This suite in B minor was originally scored fortwo-manual Harpsichord and is the longest Keyboard suite ever composed by Bach with eleven movements.An earlier version of this work exists in the key of C minor (BWV 831a); the work was transposed into B minorto complete the cycle of tonalities in Parts One and Two of the Clavier-Übung.The term overture refers to the fact that this suite starts with an overture movement replacing the allemande found in Bach's otherKeyboard suites. There are optional dance movements both before and after the Sarabande and another unusual aspect of this work is the inclusion of an extra movement after the Gigue. This is an 'echo' a piece meant to exploit theterraced loud and soft dynamics of the two-manual Harpsichord. BWV 1001-1006-J. S. Bach (1685-1750) was a German Baroque composer who is revered for the originality and skill of his contrapuntal and harmonic techniques. His Sechs Sonaten Und Partiten (BWV 1001-1006) werewritten before 1720 but not published until 1802 and only gained popularity towards the end of the 19th century. They are now regarded as the seminal work in the solo Violin repertoire and were among the first works to showcasethe technical abilities of the Violin. The Suite consists of 3 Sonatas each with four movements in the traditional slow-fast-slow-fast pattern and 3 Partias which vary with four to seven dance-likemovements. Victor Van Puijenbroeck has adapted the original solo part and included in the set are parts for both lute (the part has been adapted from lute tablature to modern notation) andguitar (capotasto). D major BWV 1054-In early 1729 Bach became director of the so-called »Scottish Collegium Musician« a music organization of students and local citizens. The remarkable results of this undertaking are the concertos for harpsichord. Today it is almost certain that practically all of these concertos were transcribed from concertos for melody instruments (mostly violin or oboe).The D-major Concerto BWV 1054 originated as a transcription of Bach’s Violin Concerto in E major BWV 1042. The principal source for our edition is the autograph score of Bach’s harpsichord concertos preserved in the Berlin Staatsbibliothek (Mus. ms. Bach P 234) where BWV 1054 forms the third item. Toaccommodate the upper limit of the harpsichord keyboard Bach decided to transpose the piece down a whole tone which allowed him to retain the frequently occurring peak pitch e3 without altering the melodic line.The D-major Concerto owes its popularity to the clear and straightforward formal design of its movements no less than its overall mood of relaxed merriment.
