The Romance is not a concerto movement in disguise, but features the dark, dense string writing typical of Sibelius. Nearly all of the orchestral arrangements were made years after the original compositions for voice and piano.Yet even though the arrangements were made in a very short period of time Sibelius handled the combination of solo voice and orchestra in all songs with equal mastery sometimes creating dark and dramatic atmospheres (in Pa verandan vid havet) sometimes radiant colorful impressions (in Soluppgang) or light-colored transparent textures (in Varen flyktar hastigt) and always basing his ideas on the poetic idea of the song while discovering refined ways of supporting it.

Sibelius wrote the five-minute Romance in 1903 for string orchestra, originally titling it Andante. However he was persuaded to change the name about five years later by a critic's review. In 1903, Sibelius was still composing in a Romantic style, not the austere sounds heard later-on after he composed the 4th Symphony. Romance is made up of three sections; a slow Andante, a faster middle section and a slow third section. Mr. Sauer has distilled the music down to a lovely solo for Trombone and Piano. This crowd-pleaser will work well for advanced performers.

The present volume contains five orchestral works, which Sibelius composed in 1904-1910: Die Dryade (Op. 45 No. 1), Musik zu einer Szene [Op. 45 No. 2/1904], Tanz-Intermezzo (Op. 45 No. 2), Pohjolas Tochter (Op. 49), and Pan und Echo (Op. 53a). An early version of Tanz-Intermezzo is included as an appendix. In addition, a fragment illustrating the unrealized plan of a symphonic poem called Luonnotar, which Sibelius reworked into Pohjolas Tochter, appears as a facsimile. Musik zu einer Szene is now published for the first time. Except for Pohjolas Tochter, all the works were composed for a choreographic purpose, (sub-)titled or referred to as dance intermezzos, or related to opus 45.
