'This piece for solo harpsichord (1995, duration 10 minutes) was commissioned by Maggie Cole. '... I have offered many options with ornamentation, suggesting some, writing out others completely, but also encouraging the player to use their invention and instincts to add others where not specified and generally to adopt an open approach to the piece.'.

Einar Englund’s (1916-1999) Flute Concerto (1985) is beyond dispute one of his greatest works. Its finest attributes are its rich melodic invention, colourful instrumentation and immediate message. Add to these its rewarding solo part, and the result is truly one of his best concertos – and works. He himself did not hesitate to regard it as such. It was premiered in Helsinki on September 16, 1985, having been completed at Ljugarn on the Swedish island of Gotland at the end of June. The Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra was conducted by Leif Segerstam, and the soloist was the concerto’s dedicatee, Mikael Helasvuo. The Flute Concerto opens with a Ritornello in which the flute's playful, dance-like passages make sharp contrast with the orchestra's heroic stance. In the mellow Canzona which follows, the flute plays rhapsodically over repetitive orchestral figures. The work's action-packed finale hints at parody in its military march-like opening, but also gives rein to the lyricism already familiar from the second movement. This product includes the solo flute part and the piano reduction. The orchestral study score (composer’s manuscript) is available for sale (product number 9790550117471). The performance material is available for hire from the publisher. Duration: c. 23’ Instrumentation of the orchestra: 3(III=picc)222–4330–14–harpsichord(+celesta)–hp–str.

The five Fantasy Pieces are manifestations of the piano in its sundry traditions. The Prelude is a response to the instrument's mechanical side and timbral possibilities; the Free Invention is a wild study in two-part counterpoint; the Intermezzo contains many dense harmonic textures; the Passacaglia is a demonstration of pianistic virtuosity, and the Postlude explores the instrument's resonance and acoustical properties. Thanks to its imaginative richness and sterling writing, Hoffmeister's Double Bass Concerto No. 1 has advanced to the rank of a popular audition concerto. But when compared with the transmitted sources, the previously available first edition of 1966 proved to be filled with errors. Tobias Glockler, double-bass player of the Dresdner Philharmonie, now presents a reliable Urtext in this edition. Through his competence as an instrumentalist, he even goes considerably further and offers various performance possibilities: the solo part can be played not only in solo and orchestral tuning, but also in the historical Viennese tuning. The C-major version, which is offered on hire, allows performances in orchestral tuning. The orchestral material in D major (sales material) is suited to the other two tunings. A beautiful and easy to read score, elegantly laid-out and with illuminating and informative preface notes. This concerto is among our most beautiful classical concerti, lyrical and inventive. It is a great pleasure to see our classical repertoire appear in such critical editions. (Rob Nairn in Bass World).
