Hear My Prayer, O Lord Op. 149

In Prayer Of The Heart the text of the Eastern Orthodox monastic prayer -- Lord Jesus Christ Son of God Have mercy upon me is sung in a mantra-like way in English Greek and Coptic while a slow recording of a human heartbeatplays. The singer is instructed to ?sit on a low stool bowing towards the heart? and may play the bell and bowl. The piece slowly explores the entire circle of fifths beginning in the key of C and playing each related minorand moving to the related dominant key then repeating until the return to C. It is a profoundly meditative work.The work was originally composed for Icelandic singer Björk and the Brodsky Quartet to benefit the charity TheChain of Hope. It was recorded by the original performers.John Tavener was that rare creature a composer of serious music and serious religious music who had also achieved commercial success. He burst into the popularconsciousness with the performance of his Song for Athene at the funeral of Princess Diana but had been a highly respected and frequently-performed composer since the premiere of his dramatic cantata The Whale in 1968.

I have always loved the book of Psalms. The range of human emotions conveyed in that book is so real. Joy, sorrow, fear, hope, worry, confidence, anxiety, assurance and much more spring out of those wonderful verses. Yet underneath all of that is a bedrock faith that the cries of exhilaration and anguish will be heard and answered. In this collection I selected 13 verses from Psalms. On each I set a melodic line to the verse and then composed 9 variations on that line. Many of the arrangements were written and recorded on a 7 string guitar; however, every piece may be played quite successfully on a 6 string guitar. Where a low A or B appears in the notation, I have written a substitute note in the tablature which will work on a 6 string guitar. These solos may be played in concert, recital or in worship celebrations. I hope you enjoy them as they are very meaningful to me. Includes access to online audio.

After a brief introduction quoting I Love Thy Church O God asteady flowing theme develops a heartfelt prayer: “This is my heart's desire let me dwell in the house of the Lord let me sing God's praise let me live in peace.” A well balanced approach to unison singing and fullfour-part harmony is achieved and the optional flute part adds a precious touch.

Nico Muhly's My Days for ATTB choir and five Viola Da Gambas. Full score.This 16 minute piece of sheet music was commissioned by Wigmore Hall and the world première was performed by Fretwork and Hilliard Ensemble at Wigmore Hall October 2 2012.'My Days is a ritualised memory piece about Orlando Gibbons (1583-1625) written for two ensembles whose recordings informed so much of my musical development. I feel like I spend half of my life trying to trick string players to play like Fretwork and vocalists to singlike the Hilliard Ensemble so it was with enormous pleasure that I composed this piece. The text is derived from Psalm 39 which Gibbons himself set as well as an account of Gibbons's own autopsy which is a poignant 17th century semi-anonymous text. One of the most thrilling things about the sound of five violas da gamba playing together is the sense of their phrasing being derived from vocal music but made somehow electric and ecstatic through ornamentation and the friction of the strings. The piece has an idée fixe based on a minor scale with two possible resolutions and many ornaments. In between iterations the voices in rhythmic unison intone the psalm. It isn't until the autopsy text arrives that the voices begin to split into more elaborate ?Gibbonsy? verses and responses. A series of semiimprovisedfragments on the text 'Take thy plague away from me' introduces the third section of the piece where plucked strings create a halo around the text 'hear my prayer OLord.' The piece ends with the ornaments wildly exploded over the voices singing two words endlessly repeated.' - Nico Muhly

Hear My Prayer Oh Lord manifests Purcell’s genius not only in his unerring setting of each line but in addition of challenging intervals and discordant moments to what is a deceptively simple melodic line. Purcell’s affecting anthem Hear My Prayer Oh Lord was writing in 1680 approximately and is likely to be part of a larger unfinished work. The autograph manuscript is held in the Cambridge Fitzwilliam Museum from which John E West has edited this rendering of the work.
