Gopak is the first movement of a set of Symphonic Dances written for the Hofstra Unibersity Wind Ensemble, directed by Peter Boonshaft, who commissioned and premiered the work in 2009. Gopak is a tribute to my Polish and Ukrainian roots. My father used to dance traditional Ukrainian dances including the Gopak, and some of my earliest musical memories include the joyful, energetic, and rhythmic feel of those wonderful folk dances.Gopak has a strong feeling of two beats, is accented quite heavily, and is energetic from beginning to end. The melodies are completely original, but the lively feel of the music calls to my mind the energy of the Gopak, notes composer Eric Ewazen.

To create the musical material of this medley, the arranger drew upon the rich arsenal of Russian folk songs and dances. Familiar traditional tunes have been combined with less well-known, but certainly no less interesting manifestations of folk music. In this attractive arrangement the following melodies are featured: The Volga Boatmen Song, The Jolly Chap, The Red Sarafan, The Forest Glade, The Nightingale and the Gopak.

Voor de keuze van het muzikale materiaal waaruit deze medley is samengesteld, is geput uit het rijke arsenaal van Russische volksliederen en -dansen. Bekende traditionals zijn hierbij gecombineerd met onbekendere, maar zeker niet minder interessante uitingen van volksmuziek. In dit aantrekkelijke arrangement komen de volgende melodieën aan bod: The Volga Boatmen Song (Lied van de Wolgaslepers), The Jolly Chap (De vrolijke jongen), The Red Sarafan (De rode sarafaan), The Forest Glade (De open plek in het bos), The Nightingale (De nachtegaal) en de Gopak.

Der Arrangeur hat bei der Auswahl der Stücke für dieses Medley auf das reiche Angebot an russischen Volksliedern und Tänzen zurückgegriffen. Bekannte traditionelle Stücke wurden mit nicht so bekannten, aber sicherlich nicht weniger interessanten Meilensteinen der Volksmusik kombiniert. The Symphonic Dances were written for Peter Boonshaft, director of the Hofstra University Wind Ensemble, who premiered the work in 2009. The three movements (Gopak, Valse Triste, Barcarolle) are presented as separate publications, each with a very different spirit.
