Gloriana, Op. 53

Commissioned by Furman University for the inauguration of its 12th president Jay Bocook's Gloriana is based on The Faerie Queene an incomplete English epic poem written by Edmund Spenser and dedicated to Queen Elizabeth I. In the poem Queen Elizabeth is represented as the faerie queene herself Gloriana. This stately work for winds and percussion has a regal quality enhanced by soaring melodies and punctuated with fanfare-like brass figures. The optional organ part provides an added dimension to the overall uplifting effect. Dur: 3:20 (Recorded by the Furman University Wind Ensemble - Leslie Hicken conductor)

Choral Dances-The set of six Choral Dances from Gloriana was first performed by the BBC Midland Chorus in March 1954 and later arranged for Tenor solo SATB Chorus and Harp for a performance to mark the opening of the Queen Elizabeth Hall London in 1967. The dances were intended as a homage to Elizabethan music and dance with each dance representing a different character from the opera. The opera Gloriana (op. 53) was written by Benjamin Britten in 1953 to mark the coronation of Elizabeth II and first performed at Covent Garden in June of that year with the Queen herself present. An unsympathetic critical reception meant that the full workwas rarely performed again until after the composer's death although extracts like the Choral Dances quickly became popular.

Lorsque j'eu l'idée de créer le Trio SAMARKAND avec Philippe PLANCON à la flûte et Guillermo LEFEVER au violoncelle, moi-même tenant la guitare, l'absence de répertoire pour cette formation m'a amené à faire des transcriptions, le plus évident était de commencer par les magnifiques inventions à 3 voix de Jean Sébastien BACH. Lors d'une répétition, à la fin de la 2e invention, au lieu de conclure sur l'accord écrit, j'ai plaqué un accord mineur de 9e en le traitant en rythme de Bossa Nova et nous avons improvisé là-dessus. L'idée de composer une suite afin de prolonger la pièce vint naturellement, et j'ai écrit un thème sur la rythmique brésilienne, mais où l'on retrouve le sujet original de l'invention de manière à ce qu'après une grosse surprise à la transition, le public retrouve une continuité dans l'écoute de l'oeuvre. / Flûte, Guitare Et Violoncelle

One might think that it would be impossible to arrange the music of Georges Bizet?s opera, Carmen, for solo classic guitar, but Néstor Ausqui has done it! While the guitar is an intimate and sweet-sounding instrument, it does not have a broad dynamic range; yet, as Dionisio Aguado proclaimed in his Nuevo Método para Guitarra of 1843, the classic guitar?s expansive palette of tone color gives it the ability to emulate ?a miniature orchestra?. Recommended for the advanced guitarist, Carmen Suite is written in standard notation with extensive digitation and occasional drop-D tuning. In Néstor Ausqui?s Carmen Suite, ??the guitar both sings like a human voice and accompanies itself, giving the work an irrefutable guitar identity.
