True to its title, this original composition, Funky Tango, is a groovin' journey in the style of Argentina's most famous dance music. Solos (written or improvised) for all four saxes (AATBar) make this a great piece to highlight all quartet members. Composed by Ed Harlow.

Your young rhythm section will really be able to dig in with this funky, cut-time rock chart. It features bold melodies along with some compelling counter lines from the Saxes and Guitar. Driving rock is at the heart of this piece, but there are several passages with winds only that provide some subtle contrast. To add a different dimension to your band’s sound, if you have an Electric Guitar player, have them experiment with some effects when playing a line with the Saxes or Trombones.

As recorded in 1972 by the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra on their album Suite For Pops, this solo feature for scat vocalist or guitar opens with a big, full-band intro in slow swing before the 'funky 4 feel' takes over. Punctuated by screaming brass parts, ad lib solo fills by trumpet and tenor, and an optional solo cadenza before the final chord, this tribute to Louis 'Pops' Armstrong is intended for experienced bands only. Duration 11:30.

A funky rock chart with attitude, this piece is good-naturedly dedicated to that one person in the band who makes everyone late as their friends chant we gotta go in exasperation. The Saxes take the main theme with brass answering lines, then the roles are flipped for the B section. Lots of Cowbell underscores the call and response bridge, leading into solos for Tenor Saxophone and Trumpet.

A great new chart of Freddie Hubbards’ great Blues For Miles that really cooks! Freddie describes this tune as Hip Hop Funk on the original CD also entitled Blues for Miles. Mike’s solid arrangement starts out with the trumpets introducing the very funky unison melody followed by a stop time chorus for the saxes. Solos follow for the soloists of your choice on slightly altered Bb blues changes and then an exciting rock flavored shout chorus takes us back to the head. Includes an optional flute part. An outstanding choice for almost any performance opportunity that your students will really enjoy playing.
