Folk dances are widespread throughout Greece. In this composition formed by three movements, Franco Cesarini elaborates some typicaldances of the Greek folk tradition by making use of three traditional folk songs, developing them freely. The first movement is a kalamatianos, a festive dance that has roots dating all the way back to antiquity and is considered the national dance of Greece. Its most distinctive feature is the irregular 7/8 rhythm. Depending on the occasion and the dancers’ level of skill, certain steps may be taken as jumps or squats. The second movement represents a zeibekiko. Contrary to most of the traditional Greek dances, the zeibekiko is not a dance performed in a group; it doesn't have any step to follow, only certain figures. The third movement, an hasapiko, is a traditional dance with roots from Constantinople. It serves as the inspiration for the “sirtaki†and progresses from a slow to a faster pace. The hasapiko is performed in a line or open circle formation, with each dancer placing his on the neighbour's shoulders.

After the great success of the Greek Folk Song Suite that has lasted for over twenty years, Franco Cesarini once again ventures intothe long and rich tradition of Greek folk music. In his Greek Folk Song Suite No. 2, the three movements that form the piece are named after the three dances reworked by the composer. The first movement, Samiotissa is a kalamatianos, whose most distinctive feature is the irregular 7/8-time signature. It is a festive dance, today considered the Greek national dance, which has roots dating back to antiquity. The second movement, Kato sto jalo is a zeibekiko, a slow-paced dance performed by only one man at a time which was apparently originated among the warriors of Ancient Anatolia. The third and last movement, Chasaposerviko, is the fast part of the hasapiko dance and is characterized by its more extensive form. A new journey into the Greek folk tradition that will delight both performers and audience.

Hava Nagila (the title means ‘let us rejoice’) is perhaps the best known example of a style of Jewish music called ‘klezmer’. Klezmer music originated in the ‘shtetl’ (villages) and the ghettos of Eastern Europe, where itinerant Jewish troubadours, known as ‘klezmorim’, had performed at celebrations, particularly weddings, since the early Middle Ages.‘Klezmer’ is a Yiddish term combining the Hebrew words ‘kley’ (instrument) and ‘zemer’ (song) and the roots of the style are found in secular melodies, popular dances, Jewish ‘hazanut’ (cantorial music) and also the ‘nigunim’, the wordless melodies intoned by the ‘Hasidim’ (orthodox Jews).Since the 16th century, lyrics hadbeen added to klezmer music, due to the ‘badkhn’ (the master of ceremony at weddings), to the ‘Purimshpil’ (the play of Esther at Purim) and to traditions of the Yiddish theatre, but the term gradually became synonymous with instrumental music, particularly featuring the violin and clarinet. The melody of Hava Nagila was adapted from a folk dance from the Romanian district of Bucovina. The commonly used text is taken from Psalm 118 of the Hebrew bible. Dániel Dobos (* 1994) studied with Gyula Fekete and Máté Bella at the Department of Composition of the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music. In his violin concerto Sylvanus, he uses the technical repertoire of Transylvanian folk violinists. His piano piece, Drumul dracului, which won the first prize in 2018 at the Béla Bartók World Competition, also focuses on a new interpretation of Transylvanian folk music roots. In Callis stellarum, Dobos set one of the apocalyptic visions by the prophet Isaiah: “For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine.†At the end of the composition, the Hungarian folk song “Csillagok, csillagok†(Stars and Stars) is heard as a kind of hopeful association. Commissioned by the municipality of Debrecen, this piece won the first prize in the youth mixed choir category of the HangKELTO Youth Composition Competition held in 2021.

Slangpolska efter Byss - Kalle is a traditional “polska†dance song most often played on the Nyckelharpa or keyed fiddle and is commonly heard in pubs and at festive events throughout Sweden . Approximately 10,000 nyckelharpa players live in Sweden today, and the Swedish and the American Nyckelharpa Associations are dedicated to this Swedish National instrument . As a daughter of a Swedish Lutheran minister, she began writing poems as a teenager and is said to have written over 1,700 different texts . There are two different accounts as to the inspiration for this hymn . The first story is that Lina (as she was called) wrote the hymn to honor her father and to say thank you to him for raising her and protecting her . A second belief is of her witnessing the tragic death of her father . She and her father were on a boat, when a wave threw her father overboard . It was said that the profound effect of watching her father drown is what caused Lina to write the text to this hymn . Although this is a treasured song to people of Swedish descent everywhere, it speaks to all people about a father tending and nourishing his children, and protecting them from evil .SPS71FThe Augustana College Concert BandFounded in 1874, the Augustana Band program is one of the oldest continuously active collegiate band programs in the country . The Concert Band is one of two bands on campus and was formed more than thirty years ago . The Concert Band attracts students of every skill level and from a wide variety of majors . Students in the ensemble play a large part in choosing their music for performance, which include works from the standard repertoire, orchestral transcriptions, and the latest compositions from leading composers .Rick Jaeschke began his musical career as a clarinet player in the 1st US Army Band . He received a Bachelor of Music degree from Susquehanna University, a Masters of Music from James Madison University, and a doctorate from Columbia University in New York . He was also fortunate to study conducting with Donald Hunsburger and with Frederick Fennell .Dr . Jaeschke taught band and choir at Great Mills High School in Southern Maryland, and for fifteen years, he was the district Music Supervisor in Armonk, New York, where he taught high school concert and jazz bands, beginning band, and music technology . During that time, the music program flourished, and the high school band consistently received Gold Medals in the New York State Festivals, as well as in national, and international festivals . As a clarinet and saxophone player, Dr . Jaeschke performed in the New York metropolitan area with the Rockland Symphony Orchestra, the Putnam Symphony Orchestra, Fine Arts Symphony Orchestra, and served as the concert master for the Hudson Valley Wind Symphony .For several years, Dr . Jaeschke served as the Fine Arts Coordinator for the District 204 schools in Naperville, IL, a district selected as One of the Best 100 Schools in America for Music . Currently, Dr . Jaeschke is an Associate Professor at Augustana College where he teaches music and music education courses, and directs the Concert Band . He has served on various educational boards, is a National edTPA scorer, and has presented at state, national and international music conferences . He lives with his family in Bettendorf Iowa, and enjoys any opportunity to explore the open water in his sea kayak .
