St. Cecilia's Day was celebrated in England during Restoration times with a great festival of music. The soloists were among the best singers of the day, and their music was deliberately florid to show their virtuosity. It is in this tradition that Purcell wrote his festal ,Te Deum and Jubilate'. It was composed for St. Cecilia's Day, 1694, and shows the same ornate style as he odes composed in previous years. It was the grand manner which assured the popularity of the work. After the initial performance, it was given annually on St. Cecilia's day for many years. This fame ensured that the work was printed in score. The present edition has been prepared from the second edition, a copy of which is now in the possession of Glasgow University.(Denis Arnold) Die einzige bekannte Quelle befindet sich in Heft 66 von Band 25 der Meslanges-Autographen die an die Bibliotheque Royale (heute Bibliotheque Nationale) Paris verkauft wurde. Texts: Latin and EnglishPublisher: Boosey & HawkesDifficulty level: 3The Ceremony of Carols is one of Britten's best-known and most-performed works. It is a brilliantly conceived and dramatic concert work which sees the voices process to their places singing unaccompanied plainsong and, at the end, processing out again to the same chant. These movements can also be accompanied but strictly only if the voices do not process. The final Alleluia can be repeated as many times as necessary to get the singers to and from their destination. The carols are for three-part children's voices (though, of course they can be sung by female adults as well) and they form a two-part work around a central Interlude for harp which is based on the plainsong from the Procession. Variety is the key word here as all the carols have such individual identities. The forthright Wolcum Yole!, the deliciously lyrical There is no Rose, the swinging Balulalow, the fiery and dramatic This little Babe all contribute to a work which is a feast of discovery throughout. Lovely solos and duos add further colour and the harp part, an inspired choice of accompaniment, enriches, colours and surrounds the voices with its pictorial musical imagery. If anything shows Britten's genius for writing for voices it must be this work. The challenges here are in creating a real equality between voice parts, fielding a confident pair of soloists, and making the most of the wonderfully colourful poems Britten has chosen to set. Pronunciation is not really an issue, but when I recorded this work with the Finzi Singers I decided to follow the example of Sacred and Profane and use authentic medieval pronunciation for which an expert coach was necessary. It brings an added element of colour to a familiar aural experience.Duration: 22 minutesPaul Spicer, Lichfield, 2011.

Penned by Brazilian songwriter Antonio Carlos Jobim in 1959, this famous bossa nova became a runaway American hit when sax artist Stan Getz and guitarist Charlie Byrd recorded it for their 1962 album Jazz Samba. A year later Getz won the Grammy for Best Jazz Performance and the tune went 'gold' when record sales surpassed one million copies. In this adaptation for instrumental combo, rhythm section parts are partially notated with chords cued and no improvised solos are required.

The Song of the Earth, composed in the summer of 1908, is Mahler's best-known and most personal work. Reflecting drastic changes in his life, its immense emotional density is very moving. Until the very end, Mahler continued to refine the extremely differentiated instrumentation, as is evident in numerous retouchings in the autograph score and engraver's model. It is therefore all the more regrettable that he was neither able to perform his Symphony in Songs himself nor that he was involved in its printing. Unfortunately, in the posthumously published first edition of 1912 and the subsequent editions edited by Erwin Ratz and Karl Heinz Fussl, many questions remained unanswered, while other were answered in a dubious way.The edition is the first text-critical one of the work on a scientifically sound basis. It offers not only a more reliable musical text, but also systematically and lucidly prepared information on the sources, their transmission and evaluation. All editorial decisions have been documented in a transparently comprehensible manner - in particular those leading to new audible results. Work-related notes on performance practice, which for the first time include Mahler's conducting indications, offer valuable, indispensable interpretive aids. In addition to the regular five clarinet parts, the set of parts includes two additional parts (3rd clarinet/Eb clarinet, bass clarinet/3rd clarinet in places where the latter plays Eb clarinet) to allow performances with only four clarinets. The completely revised piano reduction reproduces the orchestral texture true to the score without losing sight of playability. Both Mahler's piano autograph and the piano reduction by Woss, which was commissioned by the composer himself, served as an inspiration for this.
