The first publication of a volume of Engelbert Humperdinck's fairy-tale opera 'Hansel and Gretel' is a valuable addition to the successful series 'Operas of the World' for this work is the second most frequently played opera in the German-speaking area after Mozart's 'Magic Flute'.As, for many children, 'Hansel and Gretel' is their first contact with the world of the opera, it seems natural to offer a complete libretto to the wide circle of interested persons. The world famous tale Hansel and Gretel by The Brothers Grimm was set to music in the 1890s by German composer Engelbert Humperdinck. The children's opera is performed regularly at many opera houses.
The Evening Prayer 'When at night I go to sleep', with which the two kids sing themselves to sleep, is one of the most famous songs of this opera, and is also used as the beginning of the overture.
This arrangement is scored for wind quintet with an english horn. In case no english horn should be available, we present an alternative version that features an oboe instead. The flute nd bassoon players will then use the same parts as in the version with english horn.

This volume presents the probably most beautiful and most popular children's opera that has ever been written, in an easy arrangement for piano, with all excerpts being in the respective original key. Among the seven operas composed by Humperdinck, 'Hansel und Gretel' is his first and best masterpiece. The magic mood of this fairy-tale and the brilliant music explain why this opera still fascinates both children and adults.

Taken from a collection of medieval folktales, the Hansel and Gretel libretto was based on an adaptation of the Brothers Grimm fairy tale. The story features two quick-witted and capable children—a brother and sister who face many difficult times, including hunger and abandonment. Looking for food to eat, the children get lost in the forest and wake up only to meet more danger in disguise. In the happy ending, Hansel and Gretel are found in the forest by their parents. All together, they sing thanks and praise, expressing joy and gratitude for their good fortune. The ancient story of Hansel and Gretel is a fairy tale with true relevance in the world today. About the Series: Doreen Rao, 2019 Robert Shaw Award recipient, launches her culturally inclusive choral series, Global Encounters for Young Voices, featuring accessible treble- and mixed-voice works for developing choirs.
