The first publication of a volume of Engelbert Humperdinck's fairy-tale opera 'Hansel and Gretel' is a valuable addition to the successful series 'Operas of the World' for this work is the second most frequently played opera in the German-speaking area after Mozart's 'Magic Flute'.As, for many children, 'Hansel and Gretel' is their first contact with the world of the opera, it seems natural to offer a complete libretto to the wide circle of interested persons. The book is based on the critical new edition by Hans-Josef Irmen which covers the latest research.

The world famous tale Hansel and Gretel by The Brothers Grimm was set to music in the 1890s by German composer Engelbert Humperdinck. The children's opera is performed regularly at many opera houses.
The Evening Prayer 'When at night I go to sleep', with which the two kids sing themselves to sleep, is one of the most famous songs of this opera, and is also used as the beginning of the overture.
This arrangement is scored for wind quintet with an english horn. In case no english horn should be available, we present an alternative version that features an oboe instead. The flute nd bassoon players will then use the same parts as in the version with english horn.

This volume presents the probably most beautiful and most popular children's opera that has ever been written, in an easy arrangement for piano, with all excerpts being in the respective original key. Among the seven operas composed by Humperdinck, 'Hansel und Gretel' is his first and best masterpiece. The magic mood of this fairy-tale and the brilliant music explain why this opera still fascinates both children and adults.

Taken from a collection of medieval folktales, the Hansel and Gretel libretto was based on an adaptation of the Brothers Grimm fairy tale. The story features two quick-witted and capable children—a brother and sister who face many difficult times, including hunger and abandonment. Looking for food to eat, the children get lost in the forest and wake up only to meet more danger in disguise. In the happy ending, Hansel and Gretel are found in the forest by their parents. All together, they sing thanks and praise, expressing joy and gratitude for their good fortune. The ancient story of Hansel and Gretel is a fairy tale with true relevance in the world today. About the Series: Doreen Rao, 2019 Robert Shaw Award recipient, launches her culturally inclusive choral series, Global Encounters for Young Voices, featuring accessible treble- and mixed-voice works for developing choirs.

A musical fairytale
ISBN 9790004488713. 9 x 12 inches.
In 2015 Philipp Matthias Kaufmann was commissioned to write an arrangement for chamber ensemble with motifs of Humperdinck's famous opera. While the instrumentation offered a variety of possibilities soundwise, with the required 7 minutes playing time it was a challenging task for him to confine the arrangement to just a few motifs. Kaufmann chose a dramaturgic coherence for his arrangement; a pocket-sized instrumental fairytale was the result. Based on a version of the beautiful overture, the children's songs of the cheerful siblings Hansel and Gretel are played. Then, their father comes home, half-drunk to bear his life in poverty. For the sake of brevity, this is directly followed by the rumbling Witch's Ride. The gruff lady is then carefully stowed away in her oven, which leads to the jubilant finale. As an extract from a grand work, this arrangement does indeed have a charming impact, for Humperdinck's ideas can stand this kind of abridgement quite easily.A musical fairytale.

An instant and overwhelming success upon its first performance in 1893, Hänsel and Gretel has captivated audiences of all ages ever since. Engelbert Humperdinck combined the simplicity of German folk tunes with the sophistication of Wagnerian technique in a fairy-tale opera, based on the story by the Brothers Grimm. Richard Strauss, who conducted the premiere, proclaimed it a masterpiece of the highest quality. Broadcast from Covent Garden in 1923, it was the first complete opera ever aired on radio, and eight years later it was the first to be transmitted live from the Metropolitan Opera.
