J. S. Bach’s two-part keyboard pieces form a significant body of musical literature but only occasionally have they been arranged for strings. This carefully transcribed collection of violin duets and its two companion volumes Duets for Two Violas (MB # 21438) and Duets for Two Cellos (MB #21439) bring many additions taken from Bach’s suites preludes and inventions to the string player’s repertoire. Intermediate and advanced instrumentalists willdelight in the musical complexity contrapuntal dialogue and variety of moods in these pieces. Since bowing and fingering preferences vary greatly among string players editorial marks have been kept to a minimum. Thesearrangements are an attractive valuable addition to string ensemble work.

The study of string instruments should include ensemble playing at the earliest possible stage. There is much to be gained from the playing of duets. Each player learns how to listen to the other, and in a short time develops an awareness of balance, musical phrasing, intonation, and tone quality. This type of training is excellent preparation for participation in large groups. These four volumes of duets for two violins will help fill the need for early ensemble experience in the public schools. They should be used in string classes as a supplement to any of the standard string methods. They will also encourage music making outside of the school, with parents or with other students. If performed with full orchestra, the piano accompaniment should not be used. The string ensemble series meets all standards for ASTA (American String Teachers Association) and Suzuki Association of the Americas, Inc. If performed with full orchestra, no solo parts should be played except the 1st violin part. Note also, if you wish to perform these works with full orchestra and you are short certain instruments, you still have some flexibility with the score. For example, if there are not enough violas for balance, the viola (harmony part) and 3rd violin part are identical.
