1 Mazurka; 2 Grand Waltz; 3 Ragtime; 4 Sarabande; 5 Fandango Five very effective pieces for four cellos, intended both as teaching material and concert repertoire, Dance Divertimento offers enticing new music in a popular classical style for this highly attractive medium. The three lower parts are suitable for performers of intermediate grade, though all are interchangeable when students of varying abilities are present. Purchase of the score allows copying of additional parts for larger cello-ensembles (up to a maximum of eight copies), who will find this suite no less rewarding to play.

The Divertimento K. 247 in F-flat major was composed for the name day of Countess Antonia Lodron, and was first performed on 18 June 1776 in Salzburg. The little March K. 248 was presumably used to accompany the arrival and departure of the musicians on that occasion - it shares the same date of composition as the Divertimento, is in the same key, and is scored for the same instruments. Mozart later returned several times to this “First Lodron night musicâ€, and posterity appreciated it too: the Divertimento was published just a few years after his death, and was also available in numerous 19th century copies. The only authorised sources for our Urtext edition, however, were the two autographs. Here, incidentally, the lowest part is designated “Basso,†which leaves open the question as to whether it was to be played by a cello, a double bass or both - a typical case of “as you like it†in the music of the 18th century!

The unusual cast with flute (also piccolo and alto flute), cello and percussion (2 players with xylophone, metallophones, crotales, glockenspiel, woodblocks, drums and temple block) corresponds to the preference of Urusla Mamlok for harsh sounds and clearly audible lines and structures. The designations Toccata, Refrains, Variations and Epilogue reveal that their compositional thinking is determined not by pictorial but rather by purely musical suggestions. All four movements together are no more than 10 minutes long - as early as 1969, when the Divertimento was written, the composer strove for the utmost precision, scarcity and condensation, which was to form the basis of her whole further work. The Divertimento was first performed in 1975 by the Parnassus Ensemble at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York.

This volume brings together Mozart's youthful attempts at this later so central genre of the string quartet: the astonishing “Lodi Quartet†K. 80 by the only fourteen-year-old composer, the three “Quartet-Divertimenti†K. 136-138 which are also readily played by chamber orchestras, and Mozart's first true string-quartet cycle K. 155-160 which was composed during his third (north-)Italian journey in 1772/73. Mozart's cleanly written scores of all the compositions have been preserved so that the edition stands on a secure foundation. In his informative commentary, Wolf-Dieter Seiffert, the experienced Mozart editor at G. Henle Publishers, devotes a separate, comprehensive explanatory section to the well-known articulation problem “dot or wedge.†The Armida Quartet provided artistic input for this edition.

Anna Amalia of Prussia held various titles during her lifetime, including Princess and Abbess of Quedlinburg. Born in Berlin, she was one of ten surviving children of the royal family of King Frederick William I of Prussia. Princess Anna Amalia studied harpsichord, piano and counterpoint. Princess Anna also founded a music library collection, which included autographed scores of J.S. Bach and other composers. This collection still exists today (Amalien Bibliothek). This two-movement Divertimento in Bb Major has something for everyone. The melodic and secondary parts are passed equally between the instruments. The piano part is quite playable for a high school student. It has the character of a conversation between friends gathering for a friendly afternoon tea. This arrangement is scored for piano quartet, with a substitue clarinet part in place of violin.

Classical ReminiscencesDuring his time as conductor of the Detmold court orchestra, the young Brahms was inspired by the local wind ensemble to compose two serenades. Serenade No. 2, scored for five pairs of winds, violas, cellos, and string basses (leaving out the violins) is strongly reminiscent in sound of Mozart's wind serenades. The expressive Adagio is the heart of the five-movement work. Quite untypical of Brahms, he acquired a liking for the work from the outset, still undertaking a revision scarcely 15 years after the premiere of 1860; this has now been made available in a new practical edition based on the Johannes Brahms Complete Edition (JBG).
