My Dancing Day.: SATB: Vocal Score

Commissioned by Jerry Johnson and VocalEssence in memory of JoAnn Catherine Johnson First perfomed on 7th December 2008 at the VocalEssence ‘Welcome Christmas’ concert. For SATB unaccompanied chorus.Includes a Piano part in the score for rehearsal purposes.

Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day is an English carol usually attributed as 'traditional'; its first written appearance is in William B. Sandys' Christmas Carols Ancient and Modern of 1833. It is most well known in John Gardner's adaptation but numerous other composers have made original settings of it or arranged the traditional tune including Gustav Holst  Igor Stravinsky. The verses of the hymn progress through the story of Jesus told in his own voice.

Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day is a work for unaccompanied double SATB choir by composer Owain Park. It was commissioned by the Choir of Trinity College Cambridge who performed the premiere in Trinity College Chapel conducted by Stephen Layton. As well as being an award-winning composer Park also conducts sings and plays the Organ currently holding the post of Organ Scholar at Trinity College Cambridge.

This joyous setting of the traditional West Country Carol was arranged by composer John Gardner for Chorus SATB with solos. Gardner was a modern English composer and teacher held in great esteem who is best known for his setting of Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day which is the most popular arrangement of that carol and frequently performed

Chritsmas Carol-Devised as a choral Christmas waltz this carol for unaccompanied mixed voices (no divisi) by Welsh composer Gareth Treseder is a jolly setting of a traditional text. The work is structured in the manner of a hymn that becomes increasingly complex via different vocal textures. The catchy melody is passed around each part of the choir and interweaving textures should offer a welcome contrast to the common homophonic textures of Christmas music.A sure audience-pleaser this carol will also be very rewarding for the singers and will add a jovial twist to a Christmas concert of service.

Sarah Quartel's A Winter Day for SATB (with divisions) Cello and Piano. This five-movement work celebrates the long Canadian winter setting texts by the composer Sara Teasdale Lucy Maud Montgomery (of 'Anne of Green Gables' fame) and Melville Cane. Each movement depicts a different time of day beginning with the cold darkness before dawn ('Timid Star') and concluding with the evening turning into dusk and then darkness ('Snow Toward Evening'). The music conjures up vivid images of a cold and crisp winter and of swirling dancing snowflakes.

At the age of six he had his first compositionpublished. He studied at the Institute of Musical Art (now the Juilliard School) but his most important teachers were Abby Whiteside (Piano) and Vincent Jones (composition).Gould enjoyed an illustrious career. Inaddition to gaining a Pulitzer Prize for 'Stringmusic' he was Musical America's 1994 Composer-of-the-Year and recieved a Kennedy Center Honor in recognition of lifetime contributions to American culture.A long-time memberof the American Society of Composers Authors and Publishers Gould was elected president of ASCAP in 1986 a post he held until 1994. In 1986 he was elected to the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters. Healso served on the board of the American Symphony Orchestra League and on the National Endowment for the Arts music panel.
