Clara Schumann?s cadenzas to piano concertos by Beethoven (Opp. 37 and 58) and Mozart (K466) not only give a unique insight into her performing and composing style; they also throw light on her relationship with Johannes Brahms, whose cadenzas have considerable similarities to those of Schumann. This Urtext edition of the cadenzas includes a preface in which the renowned Canadian pianist Ludwig Sémerjian explores the interaction between Schumann and Brahms. Piano Concerto no. 4 in c minor op. 44. Despite its unusual form - a structure with two sections, each comprising two movements that are to be played without interruption - this work from 1875 enjoyed great success from the start. In its balanced proportion of solo part to orchestra, it corresponds almost perfectly to the model of the ?symphonic concerto? and numbers among the most popular concerti by this French composer. For the first edition of 1877, no less a figure than Gabriel Fauré undertook the piano transcription of the orchestral part - an optimal basis for Johannes Umbreit?s piano reduction for the first Urtext edition ever of this work. As for the Piano Concerti no. 2 and no. 5 already issued by Henle, Pascal Rogé, one of the greatest experts on Saint-Saëns? piano works, also provided the fingerings for this edition.

There were two reasons behind Weber?s hesitation to perform his opus 79 known as 'Concert Piece' in public. As he wrote to the music journalist Friedrich Rochlitz experience had shown that concertos in minor keys were not aswell-received by the public. Furthermore he was worried that he would be misjudged as a 'musical charlatan' because while composing it he had had visions of a dramatic love story at the time of the crusades which had influencedthe character of the work. His concerns were superfluous; the effective virtuoso piece conquered the concert stages all over the world. It is now available for the first time as an Urtext edition. The world famous pianistMarc-André Hamelin provided the fingering.

Opus 6-The Swedish composer Bernhard Henrik Crusell was long viewed as an insider tip among clarinettists; in the meantime his concertos have found their way to the concert stage. This is hardly surprising considering theenchanting music with which Crusell himself a Clarinet virtuoso of international rank has enriched the early romantic repertoire.Crusell’s works needn’t shy from a comparison with Weber’s and Spohr’sClarinet output. This Henle Urtext edition of the F-Minor Concerto marks the beginning of a new publication series of all three Clarinet concertos by Crusell which has been entrusted to the editor andclarinettist Nicolai Pfeffer. Since he combines editorial experience with many years of performance practice the works are in the best possible hands.

Among the best of Jean Sibelius’ oeuvre are his 1917 compositions The Humoresques. This fabulous and charming concerto was divided into two groups for publication Opus 87 and Opus 89 and demonstrates his sublime skill with the Violin. He uses a considerably smaller Orchestra accompaniment to the Violin in the second group but maintains the subtlety of depth and texture. The opening bars of the Fifth Humoresque act as a continuation of the minor tonality that dominated the previous two pieces but the music soon reverts into a warmer major mood. Op.89 No.3 is the highlight of this group and one of Sibelius' most immediately compelling creations.

In early 1729 Bach became director of the so-called »Scottish Collegium Musician« a music organization of students and local citizens. The remarkable results of this undertaking are the concertos for harpsichord. Today it is almost certain that practically all of these concertos were transcribed from concertos for melody instruments (mostly violin or oboe).The Concerto in F major BWV 1052 is the sixth of the harpsichord concertos contained in the autograph score that Bach wrote out in or around 1738 (Berlin Staatsbibliothek Mus. ms. Bach P 234). The initials at the end of the piece SDGl ('Soli Deo Gloria') form a pendant to the J.J. ('Jesus Juva') found at theopening of the D-minor Concerto BWV 1052. This indicates that BVW 1057 formed the final piece in this six-work opus the only authentic and self-contained collection of concertos we have from Bach apart from his presentation copy of the Brandenburg Concertos (1721). Mozart Requiem (K.626) (Ostrzyga completion) (Full Score) This publication offers a source-critical edition of Mozart’s fragmentary “Requiem” as well as an alternative to the traditional Süssmayr version. It makes it possible to perform 1) the fragment, identified in print in both the score and the parts, 2) the authentic sections left incomplete by Mozart, now in a stylistically appropriate orchestration, and 3) those sections missing entirely in the fragment, newly added in Mozart’s idiom taking into account historical additions by Süssmayr and Eybler. When completing the fragment, the editor drew on comprehensive comparative and analytical studies of Mozart’s church style and compositional workmanship. The influence of Handel and Bach manifested in his final years, particularly in the “Requiem” fragment, is taken into account in those sections requiring completion or fresh composition. At two points readers may choose between alternative movements (or sections), since proceeding from Süssmayr’s historical version, two divergent options cannot be weighed against each other but each one may well reflect Mozart’s intentions: the “Lacrimosa” may end with or without “Amen” fugue, and the “Sanctus” may begin in the customary D major or in D minor.
