Vivaldi's onomatopoeic “reality picture†of wintry whirlwinds (icy winds, chattering teeth in the cold, overthrow of the skater ...)gains in intensity and grandeur in the arrangement for a large orchestra. Frank Heckel's colorful orchestration provides a welcome opportunity for symphony orchestras to perform one of the most popular works in all of the music literature in its current full line-up.

Rihards Dubra (born Latvia, 1964) wrote his piano concerto – Liepaja Concerto No. 3 – in 2012. A 33-minute work for solo piano and symphony orchestra comprising triple wind and brass, percussion, harp and strings, the concerto starts with a mournful piano melody. It has an elemental beauty – we hear water in the sonorities of harps and chime-bells, earth in the rhythmic formulae, and fire in his colourful harmonic sequences – ending with a majestic and vibrant conclusion.
This full score (EP 73403) is now available as part of the Peters Baltic Library.

Intermezzo is the second movement of Satoshi Yagisawa’s Clarinet Concerto. The concerto was first performed by Higashi-Hiroshima Wind Ensemble in Hiroshima, Japan in 2010 with guest performer Shinsuke Hashimoto, clarinettist with the Hiroshima Symphony Orchestra and was conducted by Atsushi Kageyama. Inspiration for this work came from the fact that both Satoshi Yagisawa and Shinsuke Hashimoto graduated from Musashino Academia Musicae.Clarinet Concerto>/I> is the pinnacle of Satoshi Yagisawa’s “Concerto Series†which also features his Suite Concertante for Piano and WindOrchestra, Trumpet Concerto, Trombone Concerto, Saxophone Concertino, andConcertino for Solo Percussion and Wind Orchestra.Yagisawa’s characteristic heartfelt theme in the second movement is especially popular and consequently—entitled Intermezzo—it is often performed independently. Jahreskonzert in Auftrag gegeben.

“Composed in 1978 by Henri Dutilleux, Timbres, Space, Movement is a work for Orchestra, also named ?The starry night? after a painting by Van Gogh. It was commisioned by Mstislav Rostropovich for the National Symphony Orchestra of Washington and is dedicated to Charles Münch. This great orchestral work lasts approximately 20 minutes and depicts the content of the painting. It is written for a full orchestra without Violins or Violas. A sketch of the placement of the instruments is given in the book as its disposition differs from a full orchestra: The Cellos placed in a half-circle in front of the conductor. The Cellos represents the space with twirling solos and more stagnant sections while the lack of Violins and Violas is for the quiet and motionless part of the painting. The solo of the Winds and Drums characterizes the clouds and the light of the moon and the stars. It is divided in two parts: 1. Nébuleuse (Nebula) and 2.Constellations, which are divided by a Cello interlude. Henri Dutilleux was internationally acclaimed for his work winning prizes such as the Gold Medal of the Royal Philharmonic Society and the UNESCO's International Rostrum of Composers, amongst many others. His work also includes a Piano sonata, two symphonies, the Violin concerto 'L'arbre des songes' (The tree of dreams) and the Cello concerto 'Tout un monde lointain' (A whole distant word).â€.

It takes on a new guise, however, in this volume of the Leipziger Ausgabe der Werke von Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy: the work is now supplemented by 12 winds and timpani, which the composer himself notated in a separate wind score. Since this partial score was rediscovered only a short while ago, all the recordings available to this day feature only a string orchestra accompanying the soloists. Assuming that the work had never been performed with winds and timpani before, the presumed world premiere of the Double Concerto with full symphony orchestra took place in Darmstadt on 27 February 1999 with Latica Honda-Rosenberg (violin), Beatrice Berthold (piano) and the Kammerphilharmonie Merck under the direction of Christian Rudolf Riedel.

One of the most ambitious of Kalevi Aho's composition projects has been to write a concerto for each of the main instruments in the Romantic symphony orchestra. In 2011, with the Horn Concerto (the eighteenth in the series) this project was approaching its conclusion. In the Horn Concerto the soloist does not stand in front next to the conductor but moves around several times during the course of the work. The horn's first entries are heard from backstage. After that the soloist becomes visible and plays from behind the orchestra, moving gradually from left to right while playing. In the end, the hornist leaves the stage again. This gives the work a ritualistic character - as if the solo horn brings something from afar to the audience and orchestra and, when all is said and done, disappears from view. The concerto contains a number of sections of varying character, slower and faster. The fast sections are rather virtuosic for the orchestra as well. For the tarantella-like passage in the second half of the work, the soloist has moved to a position behind the winds of the orchestra, where an exchange commences with the orchestra's hornist. After that, the soloist moves to the rearmost part of the stage and, by the time of the final notes, is already offstage. The concerto for horn and chamber orchestra can be performed by a group with around twenty performers (1(+picc).1.1(+cl.b).1-1000-01-str(44331)). The duration is c. 27 minutes.Solo part available for sale (ISMN 9790550117396). Orchestral material available for hire from the publisher. Edouard Lalo's Symphonie espagnole was heretofore inadequately edited: the two first editions (piano reduction and score) differ considerably from one another, since the composer continued to hone his work after the completion of the engraver's master for the piano reduction, and he even made certain compositional additions. Christian Rudolf Riedel's new urtext edition eliminates all these inadequacies and inconsistencies. Moreover, the editor was able to base himself for the first time ever on the previously unknown autograph of the solo part. The discovery of this source was nothing less than sensational. Lalo, who was an outstanding violinist in his own right, had meticulously marked up his manuscript with the help of the arrangement by Pablo de Sarasate, to whom Lalo had dedicated the work and entrusted the world premiere. This new source situation allowed for the preparation of an urtext edition that corresponds throughout to the author's final version. The composer's piano part, which sometimes resembles a short score, was revised by the editor, who rendered it easier to perform and supplemented the ten measures that had been missing until now in the introduction to the fifth movement. As benfits this publishing house, the handy 6x9 inch score is meticulously edited and is a welcome aid to study of the whole works. Premiered in 1992 at Donaueschingen, the 'Sinfonie X' with more than 2 hours duration could be considered an 'Opus terminum'. The movements which can be performed individually are like an historical digest in homage to composers of the 20th century. The piano concerto movement 'Hymnus' for example obviously refers to Oliver Messiaen. But 'Sinfonie X' is far more than just the sum of its parts, the vast scope of the symphony as generic form can be felt in the musique concrete of the 'Stille' sections and in some of the other movements, it's like the design for an Utopia, for a new 'Song of the Earth'.

Concert Duets is a collection of 14 arrangements of works by prominent 18th-century composers, mostly taken from Trio Sonatas. Duet 11 is a Jim Self original work in the Rococo style; and Duets 12, 13 and 14 are arrangements of the three-movements of the Bach Concerto for Two Violins. Included with this edition are play-along recorded tracks by tubist Zach Collins, who also served as editor of the current edition.I created these duets as Christmas gifts for my tuba playing friends, with the first duet being arranged in 1976. All 14 of the duets are challenging and fun to play and are especially effective as concert pieces. As a young musician I had the privilege of playing duets with many of the world’s finest tubists including Harvey Phillips, John Fletcher, Bob Pallansch, Chester, Schmitz, Dan Perantoni, Toby Hanks, Ron Bishop, Winston Morris and Tommy Johnson. I learned more about playing music in these duo sessions than from any other musical activity I have ever experienced. Duets are powerful teaching tools for learning and mastering rhythm, phrasing and intonation and for developing overall musicianship.Jim Self:Self (b. 1943) is a Los Angeles free-lance musician, a veteran of thousands of Hollywood motion pictures, television shows and records, and tuba soloist on many prominent movies. His tuba was the “Voice of the Mothership†in Close Encounters of the Third Kind. He is Principal Tuba/Cimbasso with the Pacific and Pasadena Symphonies and the Los Angeles Opera and Hollywood Bowl Orchestras. Formerly he was in The U.S. Army Band and tuba / euphonium professor at the University of Tennessee. He holds a DMA from the USC Thornton School of Music where he is Adjunct Professor of Tuba and Chamber Music. His compositions and arrangements include works for solo tuba, brass quintet, other brass, string and woodwind chamber music, wind band and orchestra. Jim has produced many solo jazz and classical recordings. His music and recordings are available from Potenza Music and www.jimself.com. The Atlas Symphony for symphonic wind band is an impressive and subtle work, thematically complex, with a rich orchestration, but also great beauty. The composer was keen to draw a parallel between an atlas, where all the geographical maps of the world are collected in one book, and his score, which brings together all the facets of his musical style. Despite being written without any breaks, the symphony is structured around three main ideas. It is based upon a series of notes that will become the very essence of the piece, its building blocks. Like the works of composers of serial music, the series appears in different forms - melodic and harmonic, thematic or simply asan accompaniment. With its wealth of rhythms and contrapuntal power, this piece is a compelling concerto for orchestra. The Orchestre de la Police Nationale was the first to be attracted to this work and premiered it with excellence under the baton of composer Thierry Deleruyelle.
