Performed by Denitza Lavchieva clarinet Accompaniment: Tempi Concertati Chamber Orchestra Conductor: Nayden Todorov Mozart did not make extensive use of the clarinet until comparatively late in his career but he wrote exquisitely for the instrument and the two scores dedicated to his friend Anton Stadler-the Quintet KV581 and the Concerto KV622-are among his most beautiful works. Both incidentally belong to the final year of his life. The Clarinet Concerto is in the conventional three movements with music that transcends conventionality in its remarkable sense of repose and serenity and what Bernhard Paumgartner has called 'its incredible warmth of tone perfectbalance and unmatched perfection of style.' The concerto had a tremendous resurgence in popularity with the release of the Academy-Award-winning 1985 film Out of Africa of which the piece formed a major element. This deluxe 2-CD set includes the concerto in its original key with printed parts for both A and B-flat clarinets and adds a repitched version for B-flat clarinetists allowing players of that instrument easier execution plus the ability to learn the same fingerings as the composer's intended A clarinet for performance purposes. Includes a high-quality printed music score (featuring both A and B-flat clarinet parts) on ivory paper; a compact disc featuring the complete concerto in digital stereo followed by the concerto performed again but minus you the soloist.

Clarinet Quintet in A major K. 581-Ever since Mozart encountered the Clarinet in Mannheim in 1778 he loved the instrument?s warm and expressive tone. His friendship with Anton Stadler the clarinetist in the Royal-Imperial Court Orchestra in Vienna prompted him to compose not only the Clarinet Concerto (K. 622) but also this ?Quintet of Quintets? which was written two years before his death. Like almost all his works for the Clarinet this Quintet wasprobably intended originally for the Basset Clarinet. However it survives only in two posthumous prints both of which call for a standard Clarinet. These prints form the basis of our edition. As an added bonus the appendixcontains a fragmentary Allegro in Bb major for the same combination of instruments.

The Concerto for Clarinet and Orchestra was written in October 1791 about two months before Mozart's death and destined for Anton Stadler the famous clarinettist. The first movement exists in a sketch in G major for Basset Horn and Orchestra composed towards the end of 1789.This edition has been published in two versions: in the original in A for Clarinet in A and in a transposed version in B-Flat for Clarinet in B-Flat in order to comply with the popular request for that instrument. Available here is the version for Clarinet in B-Flat as arranged by Ernest Roth and revised by Frederick J. Thurston.
