The 'Hallelujah' Chorus, arguably the most famous choral work of the western classical tradition, is the closing number of the second part of Handel's Messiah. Such is the strength of Handel's word setting that this empathic, triumphal paean retains its appeal in spite of the cultural overexposure and controversy to which it has been subjected, remaining a firm favourite with choirs. The premiere of Messiah was in Dublin in 1742 as the high point of a full season of Handel's work. It was a charity event, held in aid of local causes, and in order to get the maximum attendance at Neale's new music hall in Fishamble Street, men were asked to remove their swords, and ladies the hoops in their dresses. The tradition of standing during performances of the 'Hallelujah' Chorus, still indulged at some performances in Britains, is said to have been started by King George II at the work's opening run in London in 1743. / SATB Et Orgue

Four American Choruses was commissioned by Simon Halsey and the City Of Birmingham Symphony Chorus who gave the premiere of I'm A Pilgrim the first of the four choruses on 31st January 2004 in Symphony Hall Birmingham. The complete set was premiered by the Netherlands Radio Choir conducted by Simon Halsey in the Concertgebouw Amsterdam on the 24th April 2004. The UK premiere of he entire set was again given by Simon Halsey and the City Of Birmingham Symphony Chorus on the 26th May 2005.

When the BBC commissioned this work for the Last Night of the Proms 2018 I was given quite a detailed brief. First the work should be for the BBC Singers and BBC Symphony Chorus (with the BBC Symphony Orchestra) and the two choirs should be quite independent of each other. Secondly the words should acknowledge the centenary of the end of World War I but look optimistically to the future. For the centenary I chose In the Underworld by World War I poet Isaac Rosenberg written in 1914. Originally about unrequited love it can read if you do not know its context as a prophetic look at the next four years with the sense that the women left at home cannot begin tocomprehend the horrors their men face in the trenches. The BBC Singers represent Rosenberg and their music is based on a beautiful Ashkenazi-Jewish prayer mode â?? also known as the â??Ukrainian Gypsyâ?? mode. While I was reading The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran (written in 1923) I came across these lines which seem to answer and assuage the fears expressed in Rosenbergâ??s poem. The BBC Symphony Chorus take on the role of Gibran singing in a beautiful melismatic Maronite Syriac chant into which faith Gibran was born in Lebanon. Later in his life he became very interested in Islam particularly Sufism; therefore the whole piece is in the form of a Sufi Zikr with Sufi devotional rhythms in the percussion starting quiet and low but slowly becoming higher faster and louder. The two choirs start separately but merge into a â??conversation â?? sometimes overlapping and ending on a positive note: Rosenbergâ??s Creature of light and happiness over Gibranâ??s We shall build a tower in the sky. Quite by accident all three Abrahamic faiths are represented in this piece â?? but as Kahlil Gibran famously said: â??You are my brother and I love you. I love you when you prostrate yourself in your mosque and kneel in your church and pray in your synagogue. You and I are sons of one faith â?? the Spirit.'

This selection of relatively short sacred works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart gives active choruses an opportunity to perform these pieces without having to hire an expensive instrumental ensemble. The works including the moving ?Te Deum laudamus ? (K. 141) the brilliant ?Jubilate? from ? Benedictus sit Deus? (K. 117) and the immortal ?Ave verum? are well-suited to performance in church services or concerts. Andreas Köhs has sensitively arranged the orchestral parts for organ using the original score to produce self-contained versions for chorus and organ. L’Orfeo is an opera from 1607 based around the legend of Orpheus and Eurydice. It is often cited as the earliest opera still regularly performed today. The libretto was written by the Italian lawyer anddiplomat Alessandro Striggio (1573-1630) for a carnival in Mantua. The music was composed by the Italian priest Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643) arguably the greatest composer of the Renaissance era who is bestknown for his madrigals as well as his sacred works such as the Vespers.The Choruses From L’Orfeo have been edited by the Italian composer musicologist and editor Gian Francesco Malipiero(1882-1973).

This edition gives the ‘original’ orchestration of 2 Oboes (though both play together doubling the soprano chorus line) Bassoon (continuo) 2 Trumpets (parts are given in D and Bb and are shown in the score at concert pitch) Timpani strings and SATB chorus. However additional parts are included for Flutes Clarinets in Bb Horns and Trombones which double the chorus lines and can be used either to reinforce the choral line or to replace it completely to provide an orchestra-only concert version. One chorus part is included in the orchestral set and additional copies areavailable should they be required.
