Through the well-known first theme of its opening 'Prelude', Charpentier's spectacular Te Deum has become the best-known of all French baroque grands motets. Prepared by the distinguished French baroque scholar Lional Sawkins from the composer's original manuscript, this is the first authoritative performing edition of the work.

For SATB Chorus with SSATB Soli and Orchestra. Of the 4 surviving settings of the Te Deum by Charpentier, the present one composed in the 'joyeux et tres guerrier' key of D major, is undoubtedly his most famous work, thanks to television producers who chose its opening prelude to be the Eurovision signature tune in the early 1950s. Although Charpentier's Parisian career is quite well documented, little is known about the genesis and first performance of the Te Deum but it has been suggested that it may have been performed during the celebrations of the military victory of Steinkerque (3 August 1692). It is likely, however, that it was commissioned by the Jesuits of the church of Saint-Louis (today, Saint-Paul-Saint-Louis) for whom Charpentier had been working as maitre de musique since 1687.

Who does not know the famous Te Deum Prelude by Marc-Antoine Charpentier (1634-1704)? This French composer studied both painting and composition in Italy. Returning to France, he took up the post of music master to the dauphin. He collaborated with Molière, working for the Théatre Francais until 1685. He then returned to court and was music director to the Princesse de Guise, composition teacher to the Duke d’Orleans and wrote music for the dauphin’s chapel. His Te Deum, of which the Prelude has become well known (particularly in Europe, where it is used as the Eurovision signature tune) is one of many pieces he wrote for important state and religious occasions.De veelzijdige Franse componist Marc-Antoine Charpentier (1634-1704) schreef vele stukken voor belangrijke godsdienstige en staatsaangelegenheden. Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s impressive setting of the Latin canticle Te Deum opens with a striking introductory fanfare. It is familiar to millions, since it is the theme tune of the Eurovision TV broadcasts. Andreas Gräsle has transferred the orchestral setting of this French Baroque masterpiece to the organ with great sensitivity for the changing instrumentations and timbres in the original score. This edition enables the work to be performed for the first time in an alternative version for solo voices, choir, and organ. The vocal scores and choral scores of the original version (Carus 21.032), also published by Carus, can be used in combination with this organ setting. Score available separately - see item CA.2103200.

In 1953, with timpani and trumpets a la Marseillaise, a French piece of music once again captured public attention (Eurovision Hymn) and a composer was rediscovered: the first recording of Marc-Antoine Charpentier's Te Deum H 146 was released. The introductory fanfare not only praised God but the Sun King Louis XIV, and it opens one of the greatest works of French Baroque music. Magnificent celebration and ardent pleading, effective choruses, arias and small ensembles, plus instrumental interludes combine to create a harmonious whole, drawing its higher meaning from Charpentier's musical-theological interpretation of the Latin hymn of praise that it is based on. Score available separately - see item CA.2103200.
