The Te Deum (H 146) is unquestionably the best known composition of Marc-Antoine Charpentier (1643 1704) especially since its Prélude en rondeau was made the Eurovision signature tune. Although Charpentier set the Te Deum altogether four times this is his only setting employing a military band i.e. trumpets and kettledrums. This brilliant and magnificent piece was frequently played at victory celebrations and other occasions of public jubilation during the 17th century. Even today it is still ideal for festive church services and concerts. The present editionstands at the forefront of scholarship and provides a complete newly edited Urtext of Charpentier s masterpiece.- Full score performance material (BA7593) and vocal score (BA7593-90) available for sale

For SATB Chorus with SSATB Soli and Orchestra. Of the 4 surviving settings of the Te Deum by Charpentier, the present one composed in the 'joyeux et tres guerrier' key of D major, is undoubtedly his most famous work, thanks to television producers who chose its opening prelude to be the Eurovision signature tune in the early 1950s. Although Charpentier's Parisian career is quite well documented, little is known about the genesis and first performance of the Te Deum but it has been suggested that it may have been performed during the celebrations of the military victory of Steinkerque (3 August 1692). It is likely, however, that it was commissioned by the Jesuits of the church of Saint-Louis (today, Saint-Paul-Saint-Louis) for whom Charpentier had been working as maitre de musique since 1687.

Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s impressive setting of the Latin canticle Te Deum opens with a striking introductory fanfare. It is familiar to millions, since it is the theme tune of the Eurovision TV broadcasts. Andreas Gräsle has transferred the orchestral setting of this French Baroque masterpiece to the organ with great sensitivity for the changing instrumentations and timbres in the original score. This edition enables the work to be performed for the first time in an alternative version for solo voices, choir, and organ. The vocal scores and choral scores of the original version (Carus 21.032), also published by Carus, can be used in combination with this organ setting. Score available separately - see item CA.2103200.
