Sonata no.1 in c minor op. 32-At the beginning of the 1870s Camille?Saint-Saëns showed a particular fondness for the Violoncello. He completed his first Cello Sonata in December 1872 immediately after finishing his first Cello Concerto.The sonata is strongly reminiscent of Beethoven not only due to the key of c minor but also predominantly on account of its gripping dramatic art. The exceptional position of this demanding in parts highly virtuosicsonata was quickly recognised by the public and critics and so the work soon found its way into concert repertoire.?Henle's Urtext edition takes all surviving sources into account for the first time ever. PascalRogé and David Geringas kindly provided the markings for the Piano and Cello parts.

The sonatas published in 1732 in Amsterdam, London and Paris under Benedetto Marcello?s name are to the present day firmly established in the cello repertoire. Although Marcello?s authorship is not undisputed ? by this time, the composer had already specialised in sacred works ? the musical beauty of the sonatas is all the more captivating. This four-movement F major Sonata offers all cellists well-versed in the first four positions a good introduction to the classical literature and to reading tenor clef. In this Urtext edition, the figured continuo part is additionally furnished with an easy-to-play keyboard realisation by Wolfgang Kostujak. The enclosed solo part provides fingerings and bowing marks for the cellist ? and thus the optimal provisions for a class recital!

Bernhard Romberg (1767-1841) probably was the greatest cello virtuoso of his time and compared to Paganini in his lifetime. He gave cello lessons at the famous Conservatoire de Paris among others.Romberg's popular Trio in E minor originally was the first part of the Trois Trios d'une Difficulté Progressive pour le Violoncelle Viola et Violoncelle Op. 38. The solo violoncello was accompanied by a viola and a second violoncello. The two other trios are much more difficult, with a lot of passage work, thumb position, tenor and violin clef.The Trio in E minor Op. 38/1 was arranged many times and scored for various combinations of instruments. This edition refers to the popular arrangement for violoncello and piano by Friedrich Gustav Jansen (1837-1910) which is ideal for music lessons and concerts.Also available is another arrangement of the Trio Op. 38/1 for three violoncellos (SE 1008). The Romantic composer Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy (1809-1847) has been highly regarded in Britain from the time of his first visit in 1829. He was a favourite of Queen Victoria and also made several trips to Scotland inspiring some of his best-known and most evocative works. Mendelssohn’s Cello Sonata No.2 in D Major (Op. 58) was composed in 1843 for Cello and Piano. It is scored in four movements: AllegroAssai Vivace - Allegretto Scherzando - Adagio - Molto Allegro E Vivace. It is heavily influenced by Bach borrowing elements of both structure and melody from some of Bach’s works. This Urtext edition ispublished by Henle Verlag.

Two volumes entitled Cello Meets Piano edited and published by Árpád Pejtsik were issued many years ago by the Könemann Music Budapest. The first edition was quickly sold out and no further editions followed. EMB has undertaken to issue a new edition entitled Cello & Piano with the content unchanged. The two volumes contain a selection from 200 years of music. Eight Baroque sonatas are included apart from the famous D minor one by Corelli there are some that are appearing in a modern edition for the first time in 300 years. In addition to cyclical works (Haydn: Sonatina Mozart: Divertimento Vivaldi: Concerto)and sets of variations (Beethoven Tartini) there are many shorter pieces as well not only the famous minuets by Boccherini Mozart and Beethoven but also works published for the first time here. Composed in 1948 the Cello Sonata or Sonata for Cello and Piano by Francis Poulenc (1899-1963) was dedicated to Pierre Fournier the French cellist. Its four movements mainly ternary are as listed below: - Allegro (Tempo di Marcia) - Cavatine - Ballabile - Finale Pierre Fournier partly helped Francis Poulenc to compose the Cello part as this latter was not a specialist of this instrument. Francis Poulenc is French composer and pianist. He also produced Piano and Chamber pieces Operas ('Dialogues des Carmélites') ballets ('Les Biches') as well as some orchestralworks.

Par ECCLES HENRY. Henry Eccles left behind a number of smaller works most of which were written for violins or flutes. However, the most famous is this Sonata in G minor. Though often played in transcription by violinists and especially by double bass players, the sonata was originally published for cello in four movements – Prelude, Courante, Sarabande and Gigue – accompanied by a figured bass. Little is known about Henry Eccles. Neither his birth nor his death date has been firmly established, ranging respectively between 1675-85 and 1735-45. It is not even certain that he composed this sonata. He probably hailed from London and later served at the court of Louis XV in France.
