The Romantic composer Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy (1809-1847) has been highly regarded in Britain from the time of his first visit in 1829. He was a favourite of Queen Victoria and also made several trips to Scotland inspiring some of his best-known and most evocative works. Mendelssohn’s Cello Sonata No.2 in D Major (Op. 58) was composed in 1843 for Cello and Piano. It is scored in four movements: AllegroAssai Vivace - Allegretto Scherzando - Adagio - Molto Allegro E Vivace. It is heavily influenced by Bach borrowing elements of both structure and melody from some of Bach’s works. This Urtext edition ispublished by Henle Verlag.

Two volumes entitled Cello Meets Piano edited and published by Árpád Pejtsik were issued many years ago by the Könemann Music Budapest. The first edition was quickly sold out and no further editions followed. EMB has undertaken to issue a new edition entitled Cello & Piano with the content unchanged. The two volumes contain a selection from 200 years of music. Eight Baroque sonatas are included apart from the famous D minor one by Corelli there are some that are appearing in a modern edition for the first time in 300 years. In addition to cyclical works (Haydn: Sonatina Mozart: Divertimento Vivaldi: Concerto)and sets of variations (Beethoven Tartini) there are many shorter pieces as well not only the famous minuets by Boccherini Mozart and Beethoven but also works published for the first time here. The first three movements of Johannes Brahms? E Minor Cello Sonata were composed in 1862 the last movement was written in 1865. During the first years of its performance the work was received with mixed enthusiasm. By the end of Brahms? life however it was widely performed and by the first decades of the 20th century it was firmly embedded in the repertoire of many distinguished cellists. It was notably Robert Hausmann?s advocacy of the work which seems to have contributed greatly to its promotion.Of particular value to the editors were the three early performance editions of the Cello Sonata Op.38 by Cornelius van Vliet andEdwin Hughes Hugo Becker and Carl Friedberg as well as Julius Klengel. The cellists? van Vliet Becker and Klengel?s fingering and bowing allows for a better understanding of their performance practice. As such the Bärenreiter edition comes with a Cello part marked with fingering and bowing by the editors which are based on the practices of Brahms? contemporaries. We also provide an unmarked urtext part.An important part of this edition is the extensive preface. Firstly it informs about the works? origins early performances its publication as well as early reception. Truly remarkable is the unique Performance Practice Commentary. Urtext edition score.At the beginning of the 1870s Saint-Saëns displayed a particular partiality for theVioloncello. He composed his first Cello sonata in December 1872 immediately after having completed the first Cello concerto. It was presumably directly after this that he wrote the Allegro Appassionato for Celloand Piano op. 43 that also appeared in a version for Orchestra three years later.We do not know why he wrote the work but it is likely that after having written two weighty works for Cello Saint-Saëns wanted towrite something ?easier? that was also suitable as an encore. In this Henle Urtext edition David Geringas has kindly provided the fingering and bowing for the brilliant Cello part.

Bernhard Romberg (1767-1841) probably was the greatest cello virtuoso of his time and compared to Paganini in his lifetime. He gave cello lessons at the famous Conservatoire de Paris among others.Romberg's popular Trio in E minor originally was the first part of the Trois Trios d'une Difficulté Progressive pour le Violoncelle Viola et Violoncelle Op. 38. The solo violoncello was accompanied by a viola and a second violoncello. The two other trios are much more difficult, with a lot of passage work, thumb position, tenor and violin clef.The Trio in E minor Op. 38/1 was arranged many times and scored for various combinations of instruments. This edition refers to the popular arrangement for violoncello and piano by Friedrich Gustav Jansen (1837-1910) which is ideal for music lessons and concerts.Also available is another arrangement of the Trio Op. 38/1 for three violoncellos (SE 1008). Italian-born composer Benedetto Marcello (1686-1739) composed a diversity of music from church music and oratorios to solo cantatas duets and sonatas. Benedetto was a younger contemporary of Antonio Vivaldi and his music can be easily recognised as having a ‘Vivaldian flavour’.Available here is one his first compositions for solo Cello and Continuo the Sonata in F Op.2 No.1 realised here with a Piano accompaniment. This edition has been edited by Walter Schulz and Eberhard Wenzel.

Immediately after finishing his second Violin Sonata op. 108 Fauré started work on a sonata for Cello and Piano in early 1917 thus realising a long-conceived plan. In their predisposition and attitude both works are very closely related. In the Cello sonata a sombre dramatic opening movement is also followed by a calm relaxed slow middle movement and a graceful finale. The critical response to the first performances was subdued but on account of increasing interest in Fauré?s complete late chamber music this sonata has recently been rediscovered as a substantial part of his oeuvre. The Henle Urtext edition constitutes the first criticaledition of this work. David Geringas a master of his craft supplied the markings in the Cello part.
